The emblem is adapted from the embloms of both the mighty Tranvancore (തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍) and the Cochin kingdoms. It was adapted by the combined state of Thiru-Kochi after India's independence and later adapted by the state of Kerala after its formation on 1 November 1956. At the centre is a shield of leaves flanking the royal Conch Shell (Emblem of the Royal Travancore). Crested above it, four lions stand back-to-back facing four directions (only three are visible) on a circular abacus with a frieze carrying sculptures in high relief of a galloping horse on the left, a Dharmachakra in centre, a bull on the right, and the outlines of Dharmachakras on the extreme left and right as part of Sarnath's Ashoka Pillar.
