The Baltimore Ravens were established in the NFL in 1996, when Art Modell, the owner of the Cleveland Browns, announced plans to relocate the franchise to Baltimore. As part of a settlement between the NFL and the city of Cleveland, it was required that Modell leave the Browns’ history and records in Cleveland for a replacement team that would take place in 1999.
