Overview
A small, multiethnic English and Spanish speaking country settled on the eastern coast of Central America, Belize is bordered by Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the British Commonwealth and the Caribbean Community, with a thriving economy resting on tourism, fishing and financial services connected to the international iGaming industry. Home to the Belize offshore jurisdiction, the country recognized online gambling as a profitable and rapidly expanding sector, establishing itself as a tax heaven and one of the most popular destinations for casino licensing, trading and business.
Laws and Regulations
Gambling has been legal in Belize since the territory gained independence from the British Crown in 1981, however laws and regulations specifically related to internet casinos, poker, sport betting and lotteries were developed between 1995 and 2000 as the Computer Wagering Licensing Act, and officially put into effect in 2004. Seeing how Caribbean and other nations have prospered due to regulating games of chance and skill, and issuing licenses to e-gaming companies from around the world, the Government decided to give a boost to their economy by doing the same. Their laws are based and adapted from legal systems of some of the neighbouring countries, as well as those who have successfully regulated local e-gaming markets. They are still in the process of development, but the jurisdiction is quickly gaining recognition for its many advantages, customer-friendly fees and taxes. Because their regulatory framework was devised to attract gaming operators, many of its aspects are heavily focused on applicants, and consequently little attention is given to the important issue of player safety and protection.
Although attractive to operators, it does not yet compare to the best and most renowned regulators on the international stage, often criticized as being too tolerant or lenient in the cost, application procedures and general requirements for both normal and exclusive e-gaming license.
Foreign Sites
According to the 2004 regulations, the residents of the country can frequent brink and mortar and internet gaming facilities completely legally. When it comes to internet wagering, locals can register and play at any offshore operator they choose, but those licensed by the country's own jurisdiction are off limits. Despite this prohibition, there is plenty of foreign brands available to Belizeans whose services they can use without any legal constraints, keeping their options wide and diverse.
