Revolver Gaming has released this 3x5, 20 paylines video slot in the spring of 2018, with the intent to breathe new life into a theme that may be overdone but can be revolutionized if though about properly. They managed to create an interesting game, very nice looking, with a few very special features and an RTP of 96.1%. Let's dissect Robin Hood and His Merry Wins and see what it's all about.
Theme
The theme of Robin Hood, world's most famous albeit purely mythical outlaw known for his soft spot for the less fortunate, is in no way a novelty in the world of video slots. As such, the recurring subject is always at risk of being proclaimed a deja vu or simply not original and interesting enough. So, there's a slippery slope right there already. However, take a popular theme, create it so that it's lovable instead of overly serious, put a few extra features and you're in business! And that's just what the developer did – starting from the lovely backdrops of deep and lush forests of Nottingham to the reel's frame which is a wooden plank with some foliage and leaves growing on the sides to a very nice effect. The reels themselves are very colorful and vibrant and feature evil Prince John, even eviler Sheriff of Nottingham, King Richard the Lionheart, the lovely hazel-eyed Lady Marian (Robin's love interest, in case you've forgotten) and, of course, the legendary archer himself as a Wild symbol that removes his hood if landed on reels 1, 3 and 5. A bunch of other symbols such as a sack of gold (Prince John's love interest) and regular card symbols (A, K, Q, J and 10) complete the playing set. There are also special symbols: Free Spins, Marian's Prize and a game logo symbol. The soundtrack is comprised of birds chirping in the background, while the only music is the kind of music you can hear on Renaissance fairs and is heard during the spinning of the wheels. Quite unobtrusive and elegant, it has to be said.
Betting Options and Functions
Player's dashboard is integrated into the game's screen right at the bottom, as is the norm. The right-most menu button opens up a menu with some general settings, bet settings (you can set the total bet from $0.20 to $200 max), the amount of autoplay spins (100 max), info screen with details on symbols' values, payline diagram and special features and finally, the Game Rules section containing all the possible information about the game that you could want.
Features
Expanding Wild – The Wild symbol turns to expanding Wild, occupying entire reel, when it lands on reel 2 and 4
Extra Spins – No surprise here: land three or more Free Spin symbols and you will launch a feature that will have 5, 10 or 20 extra spins, with more obtainable during the feature itself. What also makes this one cools is that the Wild symbol turns to expanding and stacked Wild and stay there permanently during each extra spin, making wins significantly bigger.
On the Mark – this is bonus feature that is triggered totally randomly at any possible point during the main gameplay. Robin will need to shoot one of the three targets – once he hits the bullseye (which he always will, naturally), a certain multiplier will be unveiled, multiplying the win by several times. The biggest multiplier is 12x.
Marian's Prize – Landing three of more Marian's Prize symbols anywhere on reels will trigger the mini-game of the same name. The screen changes to a large tree, with Marian looking down from the top of it. There will be five holes in the tree trunk, each covered by a Wanted poster for one of the members of Robin's gang. You need to guess under which poster is that particular member of the gang. If you get it right, you end the round and win the big prize as well as Marian's kiss. If you don't, you can either get a small prize and move to the next level and guess the next member's whereabouts OR...you can choose wrong and pick a hole with Sheriff which nicks you and ends the round for the worse.
Our Take
We can't blame Revolver Gaming for not trying to take a tired theme and turn it into something new. Have they succeeded, though? Partially – while the inclusion of a few bonus mini games certainly resonates with players in all the good ways and the general niceness of graphics should not be overlooked, the game still feeds a tad...tedious. For one, it's too slow and you won't be enjoying the main game that much as you wait for the short burst of excitement that mini games are. With that said, there is nothing terribly wrong with it either – just a decent slot game with likable characters to spend some time with.
