History of the Tanzanian Shilling

In the history of British East African colonies, until their independence, the East African shilling was the official currency. Since 1961, however, with the end of British rule, in Tanzania, the Tanzanian shilling replaced the East African shilling as the country’s currency.

The Tanzanian shilling is managed and issued by Swahili, or the Central Bank f Tanzania. The coin denominations available are the 50, 100, 200 and 500 shilingi, while the banknotes currently in circulation are 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 shilingi. The Tanzanian coat of arms and the elephant are currently found on the 10,000 shilingi, while at the back of it, the Bank of Tanzania’s headquarters building in Dar Es Salaam and flowers. The coins currently in circulation are made of copper-nickel-zinc, and the 500 coin was first introduced in 2014.
