Background: The aim of the present study was to review the pertinent literature on the effects of... more Background: The aim of the present study was to review the pertinent literature on the effects of mechanical curettage (MC) with and without adjunct photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the management of peri-implantitis. Methods: The addressed focused question was " Is PDT effective in the treatment of peri-implantitis? " A search without language or time restrictions up to March 2016 was conducted using various key words. The exclusion criteria included; review papers, in vitro Studies, case reports, commentaries, interviews, and letters to the editors. Results: In total 9 studies were included. Among them 5 studies were clinical and 4 were experimental. All the studies used PDT as an adjunctive to MC in their test groups. The laser wavelengths used ranged from 660 nm to 830 nm. One study showed significant reduction of the bleeding scores, inflammatory exudates and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans count in group with PDT as an adjunctive when compared to MC and 0.2% chlorhexidine. However, in four clinical studies comparable periodontal parameters were reported when PDT is used as an adjunct to MC was compared to MC in treatment of peri-implantitis. In three experimental studies, outcomes were significantly better in group with PDT as an adjunct to MC when compared to MC alone at follow-up. Conclusion: The role of PDT as an adjunct to MC in the treatment of peri-implantitis is debatable. Further longterm randomised control trails are needed to justify the role PDT as an adjunct to MC in treatment of peri-implantitis.

To evaluate the effect of silane application and silane heat treatment on lithium-disilicate cera... more To evaluate the effect of silane application and silane heat treatment on lithium-disilicate ceramic when bonded to composite resin. Twelve blocks of lithium-disilicate (LD) ceramic were fabricated and bonding surfaces were etched using 9.5% hydrofluoric acid (90 seconds). Three experimental groups resulted from the various surface treatment combinations, which included, no silane application (NS) (controls), silane application (S) and silane heat treatment (HS) (100°C for 5 minutesutes). Ceramic and composite resin blocks were bonded using an adhesive resin and light cured restorative composite as a luting agent, under standard conditions. A total of 90 specimen sticks (8 x 1mm²) were subjected to micro-tensile bond strength testing. The means of micro-tensile bond strength (µ-tbs) of the study groups were analyzed using t-test and ANOVA. The tested specimens were analyzed for mode of failure using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highest µ-tbs value (42.6 ±3.70 MPa) was achieved for LD ceramics with heat-dried silane. Both silane application and heat treatment of silane resulted in significant (p<0.05) improvements in micro-tensile bond strength of LD ceramics when bonded to resin composite. The application of silane and its heat treatment showed significant improvement in bond strength of lithium disilicate ceramic when bonded to composite.

The aim of the present 12-month follow-up study was to compare the clinical and radiographic status around dental implants placed in patients with and without prediabetes. Twelve patients with medically diagnosed prediabetes (Group-1) and 12 controls (Group-2) were included. All patients were indicated for single tooth maxillary or mandibular premolar replacement with the adjacent teeth intact. Twenty female volunteer patients, presenting with temporomandibular pain dysfunction syndrome and obvious loss of vertical dimension, served as subjects. All were weaker to the manual application of the isometric Deltoid Press (IDP) when biting, as opposed to maintaining the mandible in an unsupported rest position. The main clinical oral manifestations of ED include oligodontia and deficient alveolar ridges. This case report presents the oral rehabilitation of a 15-year-old female patient who never received an accurate diagnosis or appropriate dental care. Treatment included a combination of surgical intervention, a maxillary tooth-supported fixed detachable telescopic prosthesis, and an implant-supported mandibular fixed partial denture. The results showed a significant improvement in the esthetics, function, and psychological status of the patient. This article stresses the importance of appropriate care in providing an acceptable quality of life for patients with ED.

The aims of this study were to measure the dimensions of connectors and retainer copings of metal... more The aims of this study were to measure the dimensions of connectors and retainer copings of metal-ceramic fixed partial denture (FPD) frameworks and to explore, by means of a questionnaire, the factors viewed by technicians as important in their planning and provision of such dimensions. Using two calliper devices, measurements were made of 66 consecutive FPDs under production in a dental school-based laboratory. The dimensions of 176 connectors and 124 retainers were analyzed with reference to FPD length and to number of pontics in a span. Questionnaires were completed by all 14 technicians working in the fixed prosthodontics section of the laboratory. The largest mean vertical connector dimensions were in the anterior regions of both arches, while the largest mean horizontal dimensions were in the posterior regions. This in vitro study investigated the correlation between factors related to cavosurface marginal ... more This in vitro study investigated the correlation between factors related to cavosurface marginal adaptation and microleakage in Class II cavities restored with a light- or chemical-activated resin composite. Standardized cavities were prepared in 40 molars that were randomly divided between both materials. Each of the groups was, in turn, divided, so that the restorations were placed by incremental and bulk techniques. The resultant four groups (n = 10), each with material/technique variations, had their marginal gaps measured by environmental scanning electron microscopy at randomly selected facial and lingual points of the proximal box of each restoration. After sectioning the teeth, interfacial dye penetration was assessed by light stereomicroscopy according to an ordinal scale at the same locations as for the marginal gaps. In a general linear model with microleakage as a dependent variable, no correlation between marginal gap size and microleakage was found (p = 0.802), although the interaction of the material and placement technique (p = 0.028) and material alone (p = 0.063) influenced microleakage. The model explained 63% of the variation in microleakage. It was concluded that, irrespective of the possible role of marginal gap in the occurrence of microleakage, the choice of material and placement technique are important determining factors in microleakage.

Here, we report the isolation and characterization of zebrafish activin receptor-like kinase-8 (z... more Here, we report the isolation and characterization of zebrafish activin receptor-like kinase-8 (zALK-8), a novel type I serine/threonine (ser/thr) kinase receptor of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) family. zALK-8 is novel, in that it contains an extracellular domain that is quite distinct from that of previously identified ALK receptors 1 through 7. Analysis of the predicted amino acid sequence of the 506 amino acid zALK-8 receptor reveals an ser/thr kinase domain characteristic of type I TGF-beta family member receptors. zALK-8, therefore, is a traditional type I ser/thr kinase receptor of the TGF-beta family, but it may exhibit novel ligand-binding activities. The developmental expression of zALK-8 mRNA was examined by wholemount in situ hybridization analysis using a probe from the 3&#39;-untranslated sequence of zALK-8, which does not cross react with other members of the highly conserved TGF-beta receptor family. zALK-8 mRNA is present as a maternal message that is expressed ubiquitously before the start of zygotic transcription. By 16 hr postfertilization (hpf), zALK-8 mRNA is still expressed fairly evenly throughout the embryo. In 24-hpf embryos, zALK-8 mRNA is expressed predominantly in the developing eye and neural structures. By 48 hpf, zALK-8 mRNA is faintly detectable as a diffuse signal throughout the head. zALK-8 mRNA is not detectable by this method in 72-hpf or 96-hpf embryos. Northern analysis of zALK-8 mRNA in poly(A+) mRNA isolated from 6-9 hpf embryos detects a major transcript of 3.6 kb and a minor transcript of 4.3 kb. zALK-8 mRNA expression correlates well with known functions of TGF-beta family members as early axial patterning and mesoderm-inducing growth factors and as potent growth and differentiation factors in craniofacial development.
