Kodiak Brown Bear, Ursus arctos middendorffi. Kodiak bears are a unique subspecies of the brown or grizzly bear, which live exclusively on the islands in the Kodiak Archipelago and have been isolated from other bears for about 12,000 years. We moved while this bear was foraging near us. When it realized we were not where it expected us to be, it ran away at full speed. Now I can fully appreciate that one cannot outrun a bear.
