Mozabite Berber in Algeria

Mozabite Berber in Algeria

The Mozabites are Berbers who come from the Mzab valley in Algeria. Ghardaia is the main town and capital of the M'zab. In 1882 this region was annexed to French Algeria. They are Ibadi Muslims and strongly committed to their faith. The combination of the functional purism of the Ibadi faith and the oasis way of life has led to a strict organization of land and space. Each citadel has a fortress-like mosque whose minaret served as a watchtower. Houses are constructed in concentric circles around the mosque. A federal council unites representatives of the seven settlements. This council forms a ruling body for religious and social issues, and, increasingly, cultural matters such as dowries, celebrations and dress.

Ministry Obstacles

They are Ibadi Muslims said to be extremely devout and faithful to their traditional practices. No Scripture is reported as available in their language. There is no indication of any followers of Jesus today among the Mozabite Berbers of Algeria.
