Lawmen - La storia di Bass Reeves (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) è una miniserie televisiva statunitense ideata da Chad Feehan e diretta da Christina Alexandra Voros e Damian Marcano. Basata sui primi due libri della The Bass Reeves Trilogy di Sidney Thompson, ha debuttato il 5 novembre 2023 su Paramount+. Segue la vita del primo Deputy Marshal nero a ovest del fiume Mississippi, Bass Reeves interpretato da David Oyelowo.[1]

Produzione

Sviluppo

Nel settembre 2021 è stato annunciato che Taylor Sheridan stava sviluppando una miniserie televisiva basata su Bass Reeves, con David Oyelowo nel ruolo di protagonista.[2] Nel maggio 2022, la miniserie era prevista su Paramount+, inizialmente intitolata 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, era descritta come uno spin-off di 1883, a sua sua volta prequel di Yellowstone.[3] Nel giugno seguente, Oyelowo ha rivelato che Sheridan avrebbe diretto la prima puntata.[4] La miniserie è tratta dai primi due libri della The Bass Reeves Trilogy di Sidney Thompson: Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves e Hell on the Border.[5] Nell'ottobre 2023 Chad Feehan ha rivelato che la miniserie è un progetto indipendente in quanto la storia si conclude prima di 1883.[6]

Casting

Dennis Quaid è entrato nel cast nel gennaio 2023.[7] Forrest Goodluck, Lauren E. Banks, Barry Pepper[8][9] con Grantham Coleman e Demi Singleton si sono uniti nei mesi seguenti.[10][11] Nell'aprile 2023 la miniserie è stata rinominata Lawmen - La storia di Bass Reeves al fine di ampliarla per rappresentare altri uomini di legge di rilievo, con Donald Sutherland, Garrett Hedlund, Joaquina Kalukango, Lonnie Chavis, Rob Morgan, Ryan O’Nan, Justin Hurtt-Dunkley e Shea Whigham scritturati in ruoli ricorrenti.[12][13]

Riprese

La lavorazione della miniserie sarebbero dovute incominciare a Fort Worth nell'ottobre 2022.[14] Nel gennaio 2023, Quaid aveva dichiarato di aver iniziato a girare.[15] Le riprese sono terminate all'inizio del giugno seguente.[16]

Distribuzione

La miniserie è pubblicata dal 5 novembre 2023 su Paramount+.[17]

Accoglienza

Critica

La miniserie ha ricevuto recensioni positive dalla critica. Rotten Tomatoes riporta l'86% delle recensioni professionali positive, con un voto medio di 7,80 su 10 basato su 7 critiche.[18] Metacritic, invece, ha assegnato un punteggio di 64 su 100 basato su 12 recensioni, indicando "recensioni generalmente favorevoli".[19]
