These changes are consequences of anthropogenic activities, direct and indirect fishing pressure by deteriorating environmental conditions, particularly in the western sea. Demersal fish species inhabiting the continental shelf located in the Romanian Black Sea sector is the most important segment of regional fishery potential in terms of commercial interests, the domestic and international demand. Demersal species of deep interest, regards Psetta maeotica (turbot), Platichthys luscus flesus (European flounder), Huso huso (beluga), Acipenser gueldenstaedti (Danube Sturgeon), A. stellatus (Starry Sturgeon), Gobiidae (goby spp) and Mullidae (red mullet). Consequently, the Black Sea biota, including the ichthyofauna undergone major changes, both in the qualitative and quantitative structure and the behavior of different species. These changes are the result of anthropogenic activities, direct - through fishing pressure - and indirect - by environmental deterioration, especially in the western part of the sea. Characteristic of the Black Sea basin is that most of the fish occupy extensive areas, located in the exclusive zone of several riparian countries. The paper presents the data on the results of the research carried out along the Romanian Black S... more The paper presents the data on the results of the research carried out along the Romanian Black Sea littoral with the coastal fishing vessels "Steaua de Mare" research vessel between 1990 and 2002. Data referring to the catch, fishing effort, CPUE, qualitative and quantitative composition of the catches obtained at the stationary and actively fishing are presented. Also, the main biological characteristics of the analyzed fish species are presented, dwelling on the structure on age classes, mass, sexes and ages. The actual tendencies in the exploitable stock evolution of the economically interested species are discussed.

The European mudminnow (Umbra krameri) is listed in the category of the most endangered fish spec... more The European mudminnow (Umbra krameri) is listed in the category of the most endangered fish species in Europe, included in IUCN Red List as vulnerable species and protected from Bern Convention. Information about the distribution of Umbra krameri surviving population is important for the species protection. This paper is the first record of this species in the Black Sea. Morphometric and genetical analyses of the general muscle proteins and six enzyme systems using starch gel electrophoresis were carried out. Eighteen protein loci were analyzed and species specific markers were found. The genetic markers found could be used for the species determination and conservation.
