This study was conducted to examine changes in the beliefs and contents of articles on dementia f... more This study was conducted to examine changes in the beliefs and contents of articles on dementia from the 20th century. Factors analyzed included the form of dementia, pharmaceutical drugs, source country and income of the first author, diagnostics, and the year of publication. All articles (N=202) analyzed were published between January 1st, 1984, and December 31st, 2022. Inter-rater reliability was assessed and there was an 89.4 percent agreement amongst raters. All articles were analyzed through both PubMed and PsycInfo. Our results proved that a significant number of articles discussed Alzheimer’s disease. Scientific perspectives on the cause of dementia have not changed significantly between the 20th and 21st century. Additionally, there were no significant differences between high-, middle- and low-income countries discussing pharmaceutical drugs in literature.

Stress has been associated with deviations from typical eating patterns, with respect to both foo... more Stress has been associated with deviations from typical eating patterns, with respect to both food choice and overall caloric intake. Both increases and decreases in dietary intake have been previously noted in response to stress. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the affect regulation strategies of emotional control and impulsivity predict susceptibility to eating in response to stress. Specifically, it was anticipated that emotional suppression would predict decreases in caloric intake, whereas impulsivity would predict increases in caloric intake, in response to a stressor. Participants were randomly assigned to view either a video designed to elicit stress or a control video. Food was provided during the video and the amount and type of food consumed was measured. Participants' nutritional intake was greater in the stress condition than in the control condition. One aspect of affect regulation, impulsivity, moderated this relationship, with a tendency for greater impulsivity to be associated with greater caloric intake in the stress condition. The degree of negative affect that participants experienced in the stress condition predicted food choice and overall caloric intake. Both emotional control and impulsivity moderated the relationship between negative affect and both food choice and caloric intake in the stress condition. The present study highlights the importance of considering the personality attributes of both impulsivity and emotional suppression in understanding stress eating.

Men's preferences for feminine faces also seem to vary as a function of relationship context (short versus long-term). However, the relationship between T and preferences for female facial femininity has yet to be tested experimentally. In the current paper, we report the results of two experiments examining the causal role of T in modulating preferences for facial femininity across both short and long-term mating contexts. Results of Experiment 1 (within-subject design, n=24) showed that participants significantly preferred feminized versus masculinized versions of women's faces. Further, participants showed a stronger preference for feminine faces in the short versus the long-term context after they received T, but not after they received placebo. Feedback signals arising from the oral cavity and upper gastrointestinal tract contribute to the ... more Feedback signals arising from the oral cavity and upper gastrointestinal tract contribute to the control of meal size. To assess how these signals are integrated at central sites involved in ingestive control, we compared levels of c-Fos activation in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and area postrema (AP) in response to meal ingestion or gastric and duodenal infusions in the rat. Ingestion of a liquid diet to satiety induced significant fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) at multiple levels of the NTS and within the AP. The restriction of intake to one-half the normal ingestion of a rat did not result in significant FLI, although gastric infusion of this liquid diet volume did. Fast bolus infusion resulted in greater FLI than did the same volume infused at a rate to mimic that of normal ingestion. Prior experience with gastric infusions did not affect the amounts of FLI within the NTS or AP. In rats with pyloric cuffs blocking flow from the stomach to the intestine, combined gastric load and duodenal nutrient elicited significantly greater FLI than either gastric or duodenal infusions alone. These data demonstrate that neural activation arising from meal-related stimuli are integrated at the level of the NTS.

To assess whether the actions of leptin depend on modulation of within-meal satiety signals, we measured the effect of third ventricular leptin administration on the satiety actions of CCK. Leptin (10 micrograms) administered 1 h before 30-min access to a liquid diet had no effect on intake when administered alone, but doses of 3.5 or 10 micrograms dose dependently increased the suppression of intake produced by 1 nmol/kg CCK. Examination of patterns of c-Fos activation induced by 3.5 micrograms leptin and 1 nmol/kg CCK revealed that the combination produced significant c-Fos activation within the area postrema and the caudal and medial nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) compared with either leptin or CCK treatments alone. The leptin-CCK combination also resulted in increased c-Fos activation within the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus above that produced by leptin alone. These data suggest that the actions of leptin in food intake are mediated through its ability to modulate responsivity to within-meal satiety signals.
