(The main addition to the following credentials is Dr. Avery's sole authorship of a 1993 book manuscript entitled "Plato's Republic and the Core Curriculum: Critical Thinking, Moral Education, and Citizenship," which can be obtained on loan from the Mary and John Gray Library at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, USA.)

The dialogue is a model for discussing death and dying, the nature of love, the meaning of life, and God in a core curriculum because a core curriculum should be concerned with what we all share in common. The partners test their views and almost change them at the end, which reminds one of Socrates, who was always ready to reconsider.

At issue is whether Plato's Republic is of value in general education courses because of its alleged sexism, classism, and elitism. The author of this paper affirms it is since it has an excellent writing style, influential ideas, and can inspire critical thinking on topical issues. Moreover, the literary canon should be expanded to include works by women and people of color when they display similar characteristics, and not just to promote multiculturalism.

Students want to know how Plato's Republic can benefit them, so ask them to write an essay -- like the one provided here -- on how the ideas in the Republic can help them in their chosen careers. The rest of the paper discusses the further educational goals of moral responsibility and citizenship and how reading the Republic can contribute to students' moral and civic lives too.

Minimalist metaphysical assumptions are implied in philosophical neo-pragmatism, and so the author develops the dialectical position of religious neo-pragmatism, which is the unity of what is true in both theological and philosophical neo-pragmatism.

The answer is yes, and so an existential choice is required between a critical theism or a naturalistic humanism in the historical interpretation of diverse religious beliefs, values, and activities.
