The contemporary geopolitical environment and strategic uncertainty shaped by asymmetric and hybr... more The contemporary geopolitical environment and strategic uncertainty shaped by asymmetric and hybrid threats urge the future development of hands-on training in realistic environments. Training in immersive, virtual environments is a promising approach. Immersive training can support training for contexts that are otherwise hard to access, dangerous, or have high costs. This paper discusses the challenges for virtual reality training in the CBRN (chemical, biological, radioactive, nuclear) domain. Based on initial considerations and a literature review, we conducted a survey and three workshops to gather requirements for CBRN training in virtual environments. We structured the gathered insights into four overarching themes—the future of CBRN training, ethical and safety requirements, evaluation and feedback, and tangible objects and tools. We provide insights on these four themes and discuss recommendations.

Training is an essential cornerstone in achieving disaster preparedness, yet studies show that medical first responders perceive their level of readiness to face disaster incidents as inadequate. As real-world disaster training exercises can be characterized as resource-intensive in terms of cost and time, virtual training environments have been highlighted as a potential alternative to mass casualty incident training. Virtual Reality (VR) provides great opportunities for police officers to train decision-making an... more Virtual Reality (VR) provides great opportunities for police officers to train decision-making and acting (DMA) in cognitively demanding and stressful situations. This paper presents a summary of findings from a three-year project, including requirements collected from experienced police trainers and industry experts, and quantitative and qualitative results of human factor studies and field trials. Findings include advantages of VR training such as the possibility to safely train high-risk situations in controllable and reproducible training environments, include a variety of avatars that would be difficult to use in real-life training (e.g., vulnerable populations or animals) and handle dangerous equipment (e.g., explosives) but also highlight challenges such as tracking, locomotion and intelligent virtual agents. In this paper we present a novel method to evaluate guidance systems and navigation solutions for... more In this paper we present a novel method to evaluate guidance systems and navigation solutions for public infrastructures based on an immersive virtual environment in combination with a mobile eye tracking system. It opens new opportunities for wayfinding studies in public infrastructures already during the planning phase. Our approach embeds an interface for natural locomotion in the virtual environment offering significant advantages related to the user’s spatial perception as well as physical and cognitive demands. Accurate measurements of position, locomotion and gaze within the virtual environment enable a great simplification for the analysis of eye tracking data. We conducted a study with participants that included virtual and real world scenarios within a train station. First results exhibit similar behaviour of participants in the real and virtual environment, confirming the comparability and applicability of our method.

Improving the training experience in such complex contexts requires ecological validity of virtual training. To achieve this, VR systems need to be capable of simulating the complex experiences of police officers ‘in the field.’ One way to do this is to add stressors into training simulations to induce stress similar to the stress experienced in real-life situations, particularly in situations where this is difficult (e.g., dangerous or resource-intensive) to achieve with traditional training. To include stressors in VR, this paper thus presents the concept of so-called ‘stress cues’ for operationalizing stressors to augment training in VR simulations for the context of police work. The main idea is to treat all modes of traffic equally and encourage social interaction between road users with the prospect of cooperation over egoism. Furthermore a higher attractiveness of a road for people requires a careful traffic behavior, increased safety and lower speeds and a more attractive urban environment overall. We present an approach for motion behaviour analysis enabling the learning of interests of touris... more We present an approach for motion behaviour analysis enabling the learning of interests of tourists equipped with a location-aware mobile phone. The learning of user interests is based on relevant feedback about visited points of interests (POIs) provided by the tourist. GPS data are analysed in real time using stop and proximity detection algorithm to identify visits of POIs. Each POI has an assigned profile representing the relevant interest categories associated with it. Whenever a user visits a specific POI, the assigned interests are evaluated statistically using univariate significance analysis and result in adapted probabilities for each user interest. In order to provide a personalised route best matching the user’s interests, the POIs are ranked according to their correlation with the user interests.
