Cerithiopsis (Cerithiopsis) jutensis and Coptochetus (s.lat.) danicus are established from the Up... more Cerithiopsis (Cerithiopsis) jutensis and Coptochetus (s.lat.) danicus are established from the Upper Oligocene deposits of the North Sea Basin. The genus Cerithiopsis is represented in this Basin by several species, while the genus Coptochetus has not previously been recorded. Affinities of the two new species are discussed.

The predominantly Cretaceous gastropod genus Vanikoropsis Meek, 1876 is represented in the Paleoc... more The predominantly Cretaceous gastropod genus Vanikoropsis Meek, 1876 is represented in the Paleocene of Denmark and West Greenland by four species, of which three are established herein as new, viz. Vanikoropsis mortenseni n. sp., Vanikoropsis (s.l.) jakobseni n. sp. and Vanikoropsis (s.l.) bashforthi n. sp. The Danish species was found in a boulder of Kerteminde Marl (Selandian, middle Paleocene) from Gundstrup, while the species from West Greenland were found in the localities Sonja Lens and Qaarsutjægerdal on the Nuussuaq peninsula (late Danian, early Paleocene). The Danish species extends the stratigraphic range of the genus into the middle Paleocene and supports the affinities of the Kerteminde Marl fauna to the Paleocene fauna of West Greenland.

For the first time the molluscan fauna of the latest Ypresian-early Lutetian Lillebaelt Clay Form... more For the first time the molluscan fauna of the latest Ypresian-early Lutetian Lillebaelt Clay Formation of Denmark is treated monographically. The assemblage yielded 75 species. Four new species and one new subspecies are introduced, viz. Astarte filigera treldensis n. subsp., Abra madseni n. sp., Thracia barsoei n. sp., Galeodea anderseni n. sp. and Desorinassa tonneseni n. sp. The molluscan assemblage contains species known from different stratigraphic levels of the British Eocene, where the Lillebaelt Clay correlates with the Bracklesham Group, based on micropalaeontological and magnetostratigraphical data. The molluscan fauna suggests water depths during deposition to have ranged from lower sublittoral to upper bathyal, probably 100-300 m.

The gastropod fauna is extremely rich and well preserved. Most of the gastropods (106 species) are referred to genus level only, 9 morphotypes to even higher taxonomical levels and 79 gastropods are referred to species level. The gastropods are classified following Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) as 4 different clades: Vetigastropoda (represented by 26 species and 10 superfamilies); Caenogastropoda (represented by 142 species and 17 superfamilies); Heterobranchia (represented by 23 species and 5 superfamilies) and Opisthobranchia (represented by 1 species and 1 superfamily). The new species Zaclys? nuetzeli n. sp. is introduced. The Faxe Formation is recognized as a cold-water coral ecosystem with interfingering smaller bryozoan mounds. The Baunekule facies is found in the upper part of the coral mound complex of the Faxe Formation, where it forms isolated lensoidal bodies in the flanks of some of the coral mounds. It is characterized by a high diversity invertebrate fauna that occurs in weakly consolidated coral-dominated floatstone to rudstone. The diagenesis of the Baunekule facies is of special significance because a high proportion of the originally aragonite-shelled fauna is preserved by recrystallization to calcite during early burial diagenesis. Most of the gastropods are not known from other parts of the Faxe Fm. The fauna is very important for evolutionary comparative studies of the fossil and modern gastropods on cold-water coral mounds. Many of the genera have not previously been recorded from Danian strata. None of the gastropod species found in the Baunekule facies are known for certain to have passed the K/Pg boundary. The fauna is comparable to gastropods found on modern cold-water coral mounds in the North Atlantic. The gastropod fauna from Baunekule facies is characterized by a very high diversity of rather small millimeter sized gastropods having a preference for hard substrates; more than 63.9% belonging to the browsing carnivore trophic group, feeding mainly on sedentary animals. Surprisingly, the fauna contains some common occurrence of typically warm water species. The fauna consists mostly of Cenozoic genera and up to 87% of the species could be endemic to the cold-water coral ecosystem of the Faxe Fm. The diverse and rather unusual gastropod fauna from Baunekule facies is undoubtly linked to the evolution of cold-water coral ecosystems. A summary of the Late Paleogene sedimentary sequence in BW Jutland is given, the locality and the sequence exposed are described. Lithostratigraphical, magnetostratigraphical and biostratigraphical correlations are suggested. The mollusc fauna of the Gramian Stratotype, the clay-pit of the former Gram Brickworks, was stud... more The mollusc fauna of the Gramian Stratotype, the clay-pit of the former Gram Brickworks, was studied. The material from the Gramian part of the borehole Gram 1 (D.G.U. 141.277; 5.30 – 16.50 m) is also included. The study gives a summary of our present knowledge of the fauna. A total of 128 species of mollusca are recorded, of which 36 are new for the Gram locality. Five new species and one new subspecies are established, viz. Cocculina (Cocculina) anderseni n. sp., Galeodea bicatenata marqueti n. subsp., Nassarius (Tritonella) ronaldjansseni n. sp., Teretia guersi n. sp., Daphnella abrahamssoni n. sp. and Turbonilla (Strioturbonilla) rothi n. sp. The new name Skenea ariejansseni nom. nov. is introduced for Skenea minuta A.W. JANSSEN, 1967 (non JEFFREYS, 1883). A lectotype for Pleurotomoides luisae (VON KOENEN, 1872) is designated. Seven new species are established, viz. Liomesus brandensis n. sp., Aquilofusus mothsi n. sp., Aquilofusus birgitteae n. sp., Aquilofusus marqueti n. sp., Aphanitoma ingerae n. sp., Pseudocohlespira schwarzhansi n. sp. and Oenopota ronaldjansseni n. sp. Fourteen species are recorded from the Late Oligocene of Denmark for the first time. The genus Amaurellina is reported for the first time from the North Sea Basin. The genus Aphanitoma has not previously been recorded from the Danish Late Oligocene and the genus Oenopota was, until now, known only from Miocene to Recent. Lectotypes for Liomesus danicus (VON KOENEN, 1886) and Aquilofusus rosenbergi (RAVN, 1907) are designated.
