In 2015 the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and Naples’ University Federico II started new excavat... more In 2015 the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and Naples’ University Federico II started new excavations in the sanctuary of Athena at Pompeii, known as the Triangular Forum. These recent investigations uncovered previously unknown structures and several intact votive deposits. The following paper discusses the material traces of a complex ceremony which regarded the so-called Central Building, a previously unknown edifice from the Late Hellenistic period. The layout of the completely demolished structure can only be reconstructed on the basis of robber trenches. Two ritual pits from Neronian or Flavian times inside the building indicate that its abandonment has been sanctioned by an animal sacrifice and the deposition of sets of ritual pottery and other gifts. By combining archaeological context analysis with zooarchaeological investigations as well as biochemical analysis of the organic residue in some of the vases, the paper seeks to comprehensively reconstruct the expiation ceremony.

Research activities conducted within the Aragonese Castle of Taranto over the last fifteen years ... more Research activities conducted within the Aragonese Castle of Taranto over the last fifteen years have yielded numerous data that have proved useful for the integration of the cognitive framework of the eastern sector of the acropolis of the Greek polis. In particular, the discovery of two new vascular graffiti, as part of an unloading of ceramic and architectural evidence probably belonging to the sacred sphere, seems to offer new insights into the reconstruction of the topography and the cultic attribution of the sacred area of the Doric Temple in Piazza Castello. The archaeological work carried out inside the Aragonese Castle of Taranto since 2007, continuing... more The archaeological work carried out inside the Aragonese Castle of Taranto since 2007, continuing previous studies of various scholars, has gathered a wealth of information propedeutic to the full comprehension of the architectural structures brought to light by the archaeological excavations, to their reconstruction and dating. Beside the excavations, this search is based on the studies of the archaeological finds that include cataloguing digital surveying and graphic rendering. The aim of all these activities is to produce an hypothesis of the historical evolution of the castle site, free of the tampering produced by the recent building programs. Lime mortar is a complex mixture resulting from hardening of lime, water, and aggregates. Lime mo... more Lime mortar is a complex mixture resulting from hardening of lime, water, and aggregates. Lime mortar was used from the time of the Roman Empire until the Industrial Revolution. The recipes used differ according to the period, geographical area of preparation, craftsman, or function. This is why the study of archaeological mortars is of such great importance in building archaeology. In this study, we used laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to characterize the elemental composition of three lime mortar samples with a µ-LIBS instrument, allowing elemental image compilation. These samples originate from three different geographical locations: Angers (France), Dardilly (France), and Pompeii (Italy), and were taken from buildings that had different functions: cathedral, aqueduct, and house, respectively.
