This study examines the major issues facing knowledge management for corporate sustainability and... more This study examines the major issues facing knowledge management for corporate sustainability and infrastructural development in developing countries focusing on Nigeria. Our goal is studying the relationship between the dimensions of knowledge management (management, ideas, missions, learning organization and work of group as the independent variables and the individual entrepreneurship of personnel of industrial projects as the dependent variable. The variables like generic state, age, education and CV are known here as adjustment variables. This work is survey type using standard questionnaires; descriptive and inferential statistics on the population of the study. Data were analyzed with the help of SPSS. Our results show that knowledge management, ideas, missions and work of group have effect on entrepreneurship development; and there is a meaningful relationship between them, but there is no connection among management, strategy and learning organization. In order to achieve entrepreneurship development we recommend an adoption of more radical approaches in handling the theme of sustainability of Projects: new project sustainability models built on intrinsic sense of duty attained through individual and organizational based processes. This study is therefore, expected to arouse new interest among scholars, development practitioners and students of research about re-mapping the traditionally established paths towards project sustainability.

The objective of this study was to identify possible factors that would minimize or contain failu... more The objective of this study was to identify possible factors that would minimize or contain failure and abandonment of public sector construction projects, evaluate the identified factors in their order of importance. Data on the study variables were collected through structured questionnaire from construction firms located in Imo, Abia and Rivers States of Nigeria with wealth of experience in failed and abandoned public sector construction projects. Respondents were approached personally to collect the data. A total of three hundred (300) questionnaires were distributed while two hundred and fifty three (253) were retrieved and used for analysis. Various statistical tools such as descriptive statistics, cronbach's alpha test, as well as relative importance index with the aid of SPSS and Microsoft Excel were applied for data analysis and inference. The results of the study revealed that nine factors were critical in containing failure and abandonment of public sector construction projects in Nigeria. INTRODUCTION Construction projects in Nigeria and the world over are confronted with a lot of complexities and ambiguities as a result of uncertainties of not meeting project deadlines which also hinges on low quality, cost overruns which invariably leads to failure and abandonment of such projects. Incessant failure and abandonment of projects by the public sector according to (Ubani and Ononuju, 2013); Olalusi and Otunola, 2012) are continuously posing serious challenges to the stakeholders in the built environment. The construction industry is known to be the primary and focal point on which the development of any country rests on. It is viewed as the life wire as well as an instrument of choice of a country, due to its role in providing the basic requirements for the entire citizenry. In as much as the industry remains the instrument of choice for most policy makers, the low performance of projects in the construction sector and the disillusionment ensuing there from by stakeholders seems to have become the rule and the exception in recent time. To a greater extent, the growth and development of a country is determined by the quality and capability of its products from the built industry/ sector. Unfortunately, the inherent complex, uncertain and dynamic state of most construction projects created obvious problems of not achieving their initially stated objectives. Despite Nigeria's position as the largest economy compared to South Africa, Nigeria has persistently performed poorly in terms of providing for her citizens the best life can offer in terms of better living standard, economic growth, justice and the likes (Ingwe, et al. 2010) Furthermore, Ingwe et al. (2010) opined that foregoing poverty indices has compelled Nigeria's government into developing infrastructural facilities as a means of propelling advocacy for rapid development in terms of stimulating economic growth and development, but the performance of Nigeria's government in this regard has been dismal. Nigeria's present and nearly ubiquitous collapse of various infrastructures like roads, railways, transport, and education are a pointer to these facts. In Nigeria, a lot of factors contributes to project failure which most often than not, leads to outright abandonment. Failure in construction projects is construed to be a negative consequence ensuing from risk actions that invariably leads to obstruction of any or some impending benefits derivable from the project. Furthermore, failure is said to occur in a component when the various elements that make up the components can no longer be relied upon to fulfill its initial objectives. On the other hand, abandonment is a situation whereby the client/owner of a project ceases to provide or make provisions for maintenance and operating services to a project. Abandonment occurs when management decides for whatever reason best known to it, discontinues temporarily or permanently a project under development (Ewusi-Mensah and Przasnyski, 1991)

This study examines the effects of production facilities maintenance on the competitive advantage... more This study examines the effects of production facilities maintenance on the competitive advantage of selected process manufacturing firms in Nigeria focusing on the reactive, preventive, predictive, reliability centre and total productive maintenance strategies and their relationship to cost of manufacturing operations, product quality, productivity target, on-time delivery and profitability. We adopted the descriptive survey method for the study wherein thirty copies of a structured questionnaire on five points Likert scale with Crombach alpha of 0.703 was used to obtain data from the study population of thirty (30)respondents across the various units in the study organizations and analyzed the data obtained with E-views software package in co-integration statistics. We found out that reactive maintenance strategy has direct and indirect cost implications on manufacturing operations; positive significant relationship exists between preventive maintenance strategy and product quality determination; predictive maintenance strategy exerts positive influence on productivity target; reliability centre maintenance significantly accounts for on-time delivery in meeting customers' expectation and total productive maintenance was equally found out to have positive effect on profit contribution. The study therefore recommends that every manufacturing firm should integrate maintenance budgets into organizational objectives and have functional maintenance centres; Manufacturing firms should be committed to high maintenance culture to minimize production losses and wastes. Preventive maintenance education and training should be given to every machine operator on regular basis and implementation of preventive maintenance actions be monitored by the head of maintenance department to reduce the chances of machine breakdown.

Supply chain management (SCM) is a production based project delivery approach that has come to st... more Supply chain management (SCM) is a production based project delivery approach that has come to stay and help streamline all the experiences of extensive delays and abandonment that have bedeviled the Nigerian construction industry. The objectives of this study were to identify and evaluate the constraints to the application of SCM in the delivery of construction projects. The study adopted an exploratory research design method of investigation consisting of both quantitative and qualitative methods. A purposive and convenient sampling technique was deployed in selecting the sample size using the Krejcie and Morgan method. A semi-structured interview, multiple case study, personal observation and questionnaire survey was carried out among four (4) construction firms located in Abuja, Lagos and Rivers State respectively. The questionnaires were used as the primary data collection instrument after they were pre-tested using a pilot study for validity and reliability. The data collected were analyzed using Severity Index (SI) and Cronbach's Alpha reliability with the aid of SPSS 17.0 version as well as a Microsoft excels programmed software. The study found that out of the 403 responses gotten on the twenty four (24) factors identified as constraints to the application of SCM in construction project delivery. The followings were identified as the most significant constraints; Lack of the understanding of SCM concept (SI=50.76), unclear strategic benefits (SI=50.52), dearth of trust within and outside an organization (SI=50.31), lack of a common standard for collaboration (SI=49.32) and failure to broaden the SC vision beyond procurement or product distribution (SI=48.12). The study recommends that a forum be created through workshops, conferences, face-to-face interactions to aid in understanding what the concept is all about. The study further recommends that effort should be made by the professionals, contractors, subcontractors and the likes to adopt the SCM techniques in the delivery of their construction projects to schedule, cost and quality objectives.

This study focuses on managing human resources and organizational change in Nigeria's banking ind... more This study focuses on managing human resources and organizational change in Nigeria's banking industry within the context of organizational culture in the domain of Business Process Reengineering (BPR). Our purpose is to find out why well-tested scientific management theories in advanced countries do not seem to be applicable in Nigeria with a view to working out an alternative methodology that can best suit our culture and environment. We adopted a social science descriptive survey research targeted at a finite population of 1500 respondents spread throughout Nigeria; collecting qualitative and quantitative data from the Human Resources Departments of three study banks (First Bank Plc, Union Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa). Since our study was correlational that provided statistical associations (rather than causal between variables) we used Mckinsey's 7-S framework to measure the core research constructs and utilized both parametric and non-parametric tests to ensure that no significant differences occurred in the means of the respective survey instruments. We also used ANOVA and Pearson Correlation to determine the significance of association between the specified variables; performed all statistical tests at 95% confidence level using SPSS version 8. Our major finding is that once generic standard solutions are defined, they can be implemented to reach the desired coverage of the new solutions if top management properly understands the role of organizational culture in change implementation while at the same time performing their function of coordinating the change according to the workers readiness for the change initiative. We therefore recommend cultural audit which can reveal the unwritten code of conduct that encourage system users to hoard information. Further research might look at the differences between the results found in this study with small and medium sized companies, as this research focused only on large scale organizations.

This study investigates the relationships between project management competences and capabilities... more This study investigates the relationships between project management competences and capabilities and successful entrepreneurship in Nigeria. We adopted descriptive survey design with a total of 53 respondents from a finite population of 19 successful entrepreneurs in Nigeria and collected qualitative data by using a modified form of the behavioural event research questionnaire. We conducted exploratory factor analyses to empirically determine the number of factors within each competence sub-construct, together with reliability and correlational analyses as well as hypothesis testing using a hierarchical ordinary least squares regression analysis. The results of hypothesis testing provided evidence that although the concept of entrepreneurial competences is widely used by government agencies and other business organizations in their drive for economic development and business success in Nigeria in practice, the core concept of competences, its measurement and relationship to performance and business success is in need of further rigorous research and development.

The objective of the study is to compare our primary research findings with the findings in the extant literature for the purpose of identifying common patterns as well as, controversies within the secondary data directly related to the research area thereby validating the theories of motivation through this work. Adopting a survey design with well-structured questionnaire, we collected quantitative data and analyzed same using descriptive and inferential statistics. In the attempt to answer the research questions, we used the multiple regression models on four selected motivational variables of Reward System, Motivational Factors, Employee Motivation, and Good Management Practices. The results of our study showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between the Motivational variables (Motivational factors and Management Practices) and Workers' Performance. All the motivational factors considered in this study with their positive coefficients met the a priori expectation. Our conclusion reinforces existing knowledge that motivational variables are important in encouraging better performance among employees in the work place.

We analyzed the collected data by the use of means, variance and standard deviation and the three hypotheses formulated were tested using z-test statistical tool. The study found that human resource development is very vital to any organizations ranging from small to large scale enterprise. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommends that organization should make sure that the effort of employees are appraised from time to time to find out how they contribute to the achievement of organizational goals. Also educational qualification must be a prerequisite for the recruitment, selection promotion and placement of workers.

We seek to extend the frontiers of existing research on workplace diversity by conceptualizing and empirically examining the effects of different variables that could bring about effectiveness on organizational and employee performance. 72 respondents were gathered from the purposively selected study area using different types of sampling techniques. We collected data through simple Random sampling method and used a qualitative case study including interviews and observations, using appreciative inquiry to learn more about the positive behaviors of employees in a diverse workforce. The results from the research shows that employee training, leadership support, recruitment and employee work experience are key to effective managerial performance. We recommend that organizations should strive to employ employees of diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences because a diverse workforce will lead to higher performance, increased efficiency and improved productivity.

This study examined the nature of the relationship that exists between Banks Profitability and th... more This study examined the nature of the relationship that exists between Banks Profitability and the Adoption of Information and Communication Technology. A sample of (180) employees based on (9) selected banks was selected randomly for the purpose of this study across the banks operating in Anambra State of Nigeria. A structured questionnaire consisting of closed ended multiple choice-questions were employed for the survey. To ensure the validity of this research, the instrument was subjected to criticism by specialist in the areas of management research. Cronbach's coefficient alpha was used to determine the internal consistency and reliability of the work. Quantitative data were presented using tables-percentages and frequencies to facilitate easy understanding. The hypotheses were tested with data collected through the questionnaire. The hypotheses tested using F-Test as well as well known statistical package SPSS version 17.0 was used in order to analyze the data on the questionnaire. The data analysis showed that a positive correlation exists between ICT and banks profitability in Nigeria. The level of the regression coefficient as well as the factor analysis which revealed that an insignificant size of profit exist without the introduction of the ICT. The study recommends effective management of technological innovation for improved employees performance, customer's satisfaction, sustainable profit, increased return on investment, returns on equity, and to promote competitiveness in the Nigerian banking industry.

We used a descriptive survey research design and the sample size selected was 166 academic staff. Data collected through the questionnaire were described using descriptive statistics while Pearson product moment coefficient of correlation was employed to test the hypotheses and establish the relationship between conflict management strategies and its implications on organizations performance. This study however, has shown there is a significant positive contribution of conflict management strategies to organizational performance. The study concluded that Power, style, culture and goal play significant role in managing organizational conflicts. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the management of the private universities should create additional channels of communication with employees as means of obtaining prompt feedback on organizational policies, so that conflicting interest will not arise.

Four dimensions of HRM practices examined in this study are training and development, career development, compensation and benefits, and performance appraisal. A survey was conducted among employees in manufacturing companies in the Southern Region of Nigeria. A total of 184 questionnaires were returned and used for data analysis. Based on the statistical tests conducted, the findings showed that only compensation and benefits had a positive impact on respondents' employee retention. Discussions elaborated on the importance of compensation and benefits in promoting employee retention among respondents. The study adopted an exploratory research design (quantitative and qualitative) methods. A purposive and convenient sampling technique was deployed with the aid of semi-structured interview, case study; questionnaire survey in a construction firm in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Questionnaires were used to collect primary data after being pre-tested via a pilot study for validity and reliability. The data collected were analysed using the AHP. Findings from the study shows that the following features are key; Instituting trust and long term relationships amongst supply chain partners (ITP), supply chain finance (SCF), supply chain and continuous performance measurement (SCCPM), information technology (IT), quality management (QM), supply base management (SBM), senior management's commitment (SMC) and supply chain orientation (SCO). In delivering construction projects to success using the SCM approach, adequate attention and emphasis should be accorded to the aforementioned important features in the order they appear as they would aid in effecting the much needed success. It is also expected that the features would further be beneficial to construction firms as it would enable the firms to manage, measure and evaluate the gains ensuing from the deployment of SCM techniques.

We adopted a descriptive survey design; generating our primary data with item structured research instrument on Likert scale from a total of 428 respondents that formed the study population and analyzed the collated data using Pearson correlation coefficient and simple regression analysis statistical tools. The findings of the study revealed that recognition/praise rewards, pay/bonus rewards, work environment, training and development have significant positive relationship with employees' performance in brewing companies in South Eastern Nigeria. Therefore, reward management has a positive effect on the performance of employees in the brewing companies in Nigeria. We recommend that management should adopt feedback mechanisms that will give them signal on the performance level of the various reward systems in use in their organizations.

The aim of the study is to analyze lessons learned practices as is applicable in the Nigerian con... more The aim of the study is to analyze lessons learned practices as is applicable in the Nigerian construction industry with a view to delivering construction projects to fruition. Specifically the study determines and evaluates the extent of lessons learned effort deployed in construction projects, determine and evaluate the lessons learned enabling tools that would aid in the successful delivery of construction projects in Nigeria. The study deployed a survey research design method, while a snow balling sampling technique was used in arriving at a sample size of 111 respondents from a population of two hundred (200) practitioners consisting of engineers, architects, builders, project managers and quantity surveyors, etc from construction firms located in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. A questionnaire modeled using a five point Likert scale was used for data collection. The collected data were presented with the aid of figures and charts, while Cronbach’s alpha test, frequency distribution, relative importance index were deployed in the analyses of the key issues in the study using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20. The findings from the study show that there is a general low level of application /adoption of lessons learned as affirmed by 80.39% of the respondents, while 85.29% of the respondents have not deployed any lessons learned activity of late. Findings from the use/deployment of lessons learned enabling tools in construction project delivery by the practitioners shows that face to face meetings (RII=0.32), brainstorming (RII=0.31), project files and minutes of meetings for tender approvals (RII=0.30), technical forums/training workshops (RII=0.29) and post project reviews/performance reviews (RII=0.27) were the most deployed lessons learned enabling tools.

This paper proposes the integration of The Competing Values Framework (Quinn 1984:1988) with Nona... more This paper proposes the integration of The Competing Values Framework (Quinn 1984:1988) with Nonaka and Takeuchi's (1995) knowledge creation and conversion model. Conceptual parallels between the two models are identified and the interaction effects among dimensions are analysed. The resulting Organizational Knowledge Management Model highlights further understanding of the social and organizational cultural processes that drive knowledge creation and underpin organizational effectiveness. Implications for theory and practice, as well as directions for future research are presented. INTRODUCTION Several models and frameworks abound to guide knowledge management (KM) implementation and strategy in organizations. These are mostly based on experiences and studies in Western industrialized countries that are already becoming knowledge economies. Application of these models and frameworks in developing countries might not yield expected results. For organizations in developing countries to participate in this new economy, there is need to understand the issues of KM in their local context.
