The paper is focused on exploring the factors that facilitate parent involvement in their child&#... more The paper is focused on exploring the factors that facilitate parent involvement in their child's education and school life. A sample of 670 Romanian school principals from the Cross-National Survey of School Principals in South East Europe (SEE) countries 2008 was used. Two-step linear regressions were run in order to predict parent participation in school meetings, parent engagement in school activities and parent influence in school governance, as reported by school principals. The results indicated that the level of parents' organizations influence on school governance, school administration, and teaching methods is as important as the school background (size, location, budget, principal's experience, and shares of vulnerable children).

ABSTRACT Our research considers the utility for the Romanian education system of the practical ed... more ABSTRACT Our research considers the utility for the Romanian education system of the practical education tool called School Success Profile developed in the Social Work School in Chapel Hill, US by G. Bowen and J. Richman. The paper describes the process we went through to adapt the instrument and to validate it in Romania. The first stage of validation went through focus groups with children. Their content analysis indicated some difficulties of students to understand a few items and highlighted some cultural differences. The data collected from 2700 school-children allows further comparative analysis. It reveals that most of the factors of school success described by the instrument in the original version are acting in similar ways in Romania as in the US. This allows us to further analyze the chances of applying it in Romanian schools, taking into consideration the different traditions and practices of school administration and organization, in order to manage social factors of school success and apply appropriate evidence based intervention programs.

In the postmodern era the impact media have on our lives is continuously growing. Not only do med... more In the postmodern era the impact media have on our lives is continuously growing. Not only do media reflect reality, but they also shape and reconstruct it according to the public's hopes, fears or fantasies. Reality itself is not the sum of all objective processes and things, but it is socially constructed by the discourses that reflect and produce power. On the other hand, the public does not simply accept or reject the media messages, but interprets them according to its social background (Zoonen, 1994, p. 41). My interest lies in identifying how are women represented in the media and what are the dominant images of femininity, as well as the alternative ones. There is a strong connection between image and identity as the latter can not be constructed without the former. Basically, the postmodern subject has been reduced to an image, therefore the image plays an important part in constructing the feminine identity.

The main outcome of the research was the development of the SSP-School Inclusion Questionnaire, intended to: (1) measure school inclusion levels among students; (2) identify students with significantly lower levels of school inclusion, who need to be included in intervention programs; and (3) measure the impact of intervention programs using subjective indicators (beneficiaries' perception of school and teachers, feelings of safety in school, school performance). The questionnaire was completed by 480 vocational school students aged 15-19 from a large developed urban area (Cluj-Napoca) in Romania. The purpose of the research was to test the validity and reliability of the instrument and to propose it to professionals working in education (school psychologists, school counsellors etc.) for efficient data collection and for measuring...
ABSTRACT The paper is focused on the adaptation of the School Success Profile (SSP) questionnaire... more ABSTRACT The paper is focused on the adaptation of the School Success Profile (SSP) questionnaire, designed and validated in the USA, to the Romanian context. The Romanian research team assumed that school success in Romania is influenced by similar social-contextual factors as it is in the United States. The paper shortly presents the SSP instrument and compares the results obtained on nationally representative samples in the USA and in Romania. In both contexts, each social environment dimension (school, peers, neighbourhood and family) had a significant effect both on school attitudes and behaviour, and on personal beliefs and well being. Data revealed significant associations between demographic variables (gender, ethnicity, school level, income) and respondents’ school performance.
