The aim of the study was to explore whether passive stiffness of the hamstrings influences the st... more The aim of the study was to explore whether passive stiffness of the hamstrings influences the strategy of maintaining postural stability. A sample of 50 subjects was selected; the final analyses were based on data of 41 individuals (33 men, 8 women) aged 21 to 29 (mean = 23.3, SD = 1.1) years. A quasi- experimental ex post facto design with repeated measures was used. Categories of independent variables were obtained directly prior to the measurement of the dependent variables. In stage one of the study, passive knee extension was measured in the supine position to assess hamstring stiffness. In stage two, the magnitude of postural sway in antero-posterior direction was measured, while varying the body position on a stabilometric platform, both with and without visual control. The margin of safety was used as a measure of postural control. The magnitude of the margin of safety increased significantly between the open-eye and closed-eye trials. However, although we registered a visible tendency for a larger increase of the margin of safety associated with lower levels of passive hamstrings stiffness, no significant differences were found. Therefore, this study demonstrated that hamstring stiffness did not influence the strategy used to maintain postural stability.

Synergies were expected during one-person jumping. No such synergies were expected between two persons jumping in parallel without additional contact, while synergies were expected to emerge with haptic contact and become stronger with strong mechanical contact. Subjects performed jumps either alone (each foot standing on a separate force platform) or in dyads (parallel to each other, each person standing on a separate force platform) without any contact, with haptic contact, and with strong coupling. Strong negative correlations between pairs of force variables (strong synergies) were seen in the vertical force in one-person jumps and weaker synergies in two-person jumps with the strong contact. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness and influence on gait parameters of a 4 – week automated training by a driven gait orthosis. Material and methods. Treadmill training with a driven gait orthosis was used for a 7 year with hemiplegia. Her disability represented 1 level in the GMFCS scale. The child received 18 sessions over 4-week period (5sessions/week, mean therapy duration was 45 minutes per session). Pre and post-training evaluations were performed on kinematics gait parameters using motion capture system (BTS-Smart). Results. After therapy were observed return or approximate value of the evaluated parameters to a normative level of control group. Conclusions. Even small changes in temporal and distance parameters of gait could improve comfort and quality of the patient’s gait. After therapy, there was noted improvement in most of the gait parameters pointing to positive impact of this form of therapy in patient with impaired gait described.

Thirteen male basketball players (age, 22.3 ± 2.9 yrs; training experience, 8.6 ± 2.3 yrs) volunteered to participate in the study. The trial consisted of two phases separated by one day of active rest. At the beginning of the experiment, body mass and body composition were appraised. An incremental test was used to determine the aerobic capacity and lactate threshold. During the second phase, each athlete performed two efforts of different intensities on a treadmill, followed by balance assessment. ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference in lactate concentration (p=0.001) as well as in pH (p=0.001) between pre- and post-anaerobic exercise conditions. Arthroplasty still remains the most effective treatment of OA. Routine post-operative patient assessment does not include an objective functional examination leading to conclusions regarding the need of further rehabilitation. This role is played by gait analysis performed in patients after arthroplasty. The aim of the study was to conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis of selected gait parameters in patients after unilateral cementless hip arthroplasty. The study involved a group of 16 patients who were examined before and after hip arthroplasty. Gait analysis was conducted before surgery and at least 6 months after the procedure. Posturographic tests were performed in 31 women at 34-39 weeks gestation, and again at 6-10 weeks postpartum. The center of pressure mean velocity (with directional subcomponents) and sway area were computed from 30-s quiet standing trials on a stationary force plate with eyes open or closed. The women were surveyed about their lifestyle and physical activity in the perinatal period. Based on the survey, 12 of the women were assigned as regular exercisers and 19 as non-exercisers. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare data of the exercisers and the non-exercisers in their advanced pregnancy and again at 2 months postpartum. The aim of this study was to check whether there was a correlation between the value of the maxim... more The aim of this study was to check whether there was a correlation between the value of the maximum developed torque of the quadriceps femoris muscle and subjective evaluation of a patient's pain which is measured by the VAS. Also evaluated were changes in the muscle torque value and KSS scale over time. For examining patient's condition use was made of a KSS scale (knee score: pain, range of motion, stability of joint and limb axis) before the surgery and in weeks 6 and 12, as well as 6 months after surgery. It was found to be constantly improving in comparison with the condition before the surgery. This is confirmed by a significant statistical value difference of KSS scale. The surgery substantially increases the quality of live and function recurrence.

We have checked the usefulness of multimodular measuring system (SMART-E, BTS company, Italy) and a special device for tracking the position of barbell (pantograph). Software Smart Analyser was used to create a database allowing chosen parameters to be compared. The results from different measuring devices are very similar, therefore the replacement of many devices by one multimodular system is reasonable. In our study, the effect of increased barbell load on the values of muscles activity and bar kinematics during the flat bench press movement was clearly visible. The greater the weight of a barbell, the greater the myoactivity of shoulder muscles and vertical velocity of the bar. A single set of exercises and a 4-week vibration training were assessed for their impact on the center of foot pressure (COP) sway. The sample consisted of 49 male subjects randomly allocated to seven comparative groups, six of which exercised on a vibration platform whose parameters were set individually for the groups. Group VII was the control group. The stabilographic signal was recorded before the test commenced, after a single application of vibration, before the last set of exercises of the 4-week vibration training, immediately afterwards, as well as one week and one month after the training ended. The subjects were exposed to vibration 3 times a week for 4 weeks.
