Evidence from various climate proxies provides us with increasingly reliable proof that only in t... more Evidence from various climate proxies provides us with increasingly reliable proof that only in the past 10 millennia were natural systems more or less as we see them at the present (without considering human impact). Prior to 10,000 years ago, natural systems repeatedly changed under the influence of an unstable climate. This is particularly true over the last one million years. During these times, terrestrial environments were populated by a diversity of large animals that did not survive either the last dramatic climate change or the increasing power of humans. The volume of continental ice covering the land and its impact on the planet’s physiography∗ and vegetation have varied consistently. We can try to imagine extreme conditions: the very cold springtimes of the full glacials∗, and the warm springtimes of the rapid deglaciation phases, with enormous volumes of water feeding terrifying rivers. Research and practical activities concerning environmental education are the main goals of the Ge... more Research and practical activities concerning environmental education are the main goals of the GeoDidaLab, a laboratory founded in the ‘90s by a couple of school teachers, since 2012 led by the Earth Science Department of the Torino University (Italy). It is located at the core of the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre (IMA), whose glacial landforms and deposits constitute an extraordinary landscape and a geoheritage site of international value.Over the years, schools from more than 50 municipalities of the Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta Regions adhered to the activities proposed by the laboratory. Today, its educational offer includes more than 20 interdisciplinary workshops, suitable for students from kindergarten to university level. Particular attention is also devoted in training preand in-service teachers.Thanks to agreements with local communities and schools, new strategies for spreading Earth Science knowledge and environmental education are constantly developed and tested.

Urban geomorphology is a theme of increasing interest over the last decades. The present research... more Urban geomorphology is a theme of increasing interest over the last decades. The present research about the Turin geomorphology (NW Italy) was carried out based on the drilling of 40 boreholes, of which 34 were designed for the construction of a new sewer collector by SMAT-Società Metropolitana Acque Torino, while other 6 were in the Valentino Park. These investigations allow us to evaluate the detailed morphology of the proglacial plain of the Rivoli-Avigliana end-moraine system (RAES) and facies, thickness and petrographic composition of fluvial sandy gravel forming this plain (Turin Unit). The local discovery of a truncated palaeosol suggests that this unit lies on a significant erosional surface shaped on more ancient fluvial sediments. New radiocarbon dating of woody macrorest above the palaeosol proves the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) age of the Turin Unit. The results of geological and geophysical surveys performed in the Asti Reliefs along the Torrent... more The results of geological and geophysical surveys performed in the Asti Reliefs along the Torrente Traversola Deformation Zone (TTDZ), have been reported in this work. The outcropping “villafranchian ” succession shows local anomalies within this zone, consisting in sub-vertical geological contacts linked to faults, as well as bodies connected to gravitational reworking of sediments. This setting is due to the recent evolution of faults along the TTDZ system, which is characterised by a main strike-slip movement. Tectonic evolution has been clearly outlined by the combination of Electric Resistivity Tomography and geological interpretation of the anomalies in the stratigraphic succession.
