Abstract
This paper aims to examine whether being exposed to stressful working conditions (job strain), particularly when combined with low social support (iso-strain), increases the propensity to join unions. The study is based on the 2011 REPONSE survey. The results do not show any significant link between the level of job demand and union membership. But we find that experiencing a certain form of iso-strain has a positive effect on the probability of being a union member. Our findings are in line with theories like the frustration/aggression approach or the “voice model”, which relate the union membership decision to work dissatisfaction and the desire to change one’s working conditions.
