Abstract

This paper investigates the determinants of the international sourcing propensities of foreign-owned multinational (MNE) subsidiaries in four European Union host countries. Major findings concern the impact of subsidiary roles and economic integration on international sourcing patterns. Regional and global integration are leading to a greater import-orientation among MNE subsidiaries, including Product Mandate firms that are assumed to be strongly embedded within host economies. The results cast doubts on existing criteria for inward foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction. Policy implications are developed relating to the attraction of inward FDI and to corporate development policies. Tavares A. T. et Young S. Dieser Aufsatz untersucht die bestimmenden Faktoren der internationalen Beschaffungspraferenzen von in auslandischem Besitz befindlichen multinationalen (MNE) Tochtergesellschaften in vier Gastlandern der EU. Die Hauptbefunde betreffen die Auswirkung der Tochtergesellschaftsrollen und wirtschaftlicher Integration auf internationale Beschaffungsmuster. Regionale und globale Integration fuhren zu verstarkter Importorientierung unter MNE Tochtergesellschaften, einschliesslich Produktauftragsfirmen, von denen man annimmt, dass sie fest in Gastgeberwirtschaften verankert sind. Die Ergebnisse lassen Zweifel an gegenwartig vorgebrachten Kriterien fur die Attraktion vom Ausland getatigter Direktinvestitionen (FDI) aufkommen. Es werden Implikationen der Bestrebungen entwickelt, die sich auf die Attraktion vom Ausland vorgenommener FDI und auf korporative Entwicklungsbestrebungen beziehen. En este articulo investigo cuales son los factores que determinan una predisposicion a la contratacion internacional de filiales multinacionales de propiedad extranjera en cuatro paises anfitriones europeos. Uno de los resultados mas importantes es el impacto que tienen la funcion de las filiales y la integracion economica en los modelos de contrataciones internacionales. La integracion regional y global conducen a una mayor orientacion en lo que respecta a las importaciones entre las filiales de multinacionales de propiedad extranjera, como es el caso de las empresas con exclusividad de productos que se supone que estan bien arraigadas en las economias anfitrionas. Los resultados ponen en entredicho los criterios actuales de la atraccion interna de inversion extranjera directa (IED).
