The Dutch East India Company was a trading company founded in the Dutch Republic in 1602 and greatly prospered from its commercial empire in the East Indies. The Dutch East India Company held such great power that it was able to manipulate the Dutch government into providing it a trade monopoly by giving access to the Dutch waters and from there the Dutch East India Company essentially controlled all main forms of trade until 1799.
