To this extent, it assesses technology maturity against specific benchmarks, ranging from 1 (concept) to 9 (market solution). Although this is a useful classification service, allowing us to establish a common language, there are cases where we find that this conceptual approach fails to adequately highlight the maturity of certain innovative endeavors and effectively steer their development to higher TR levels. We will present an empirical case where the TRL approach presented a critical shortcoming in highlighting the true and effective readiness of a specific technological development and could not suggest the next natural step in ascending the maturity ladder. Building electric energy is characterized by a significant increase of its uses (e.g. vehicle cha... more Building electric energy is characterized by a significant increase of its uses (e.g. vehicle charging), a rapidly declining cost of all related data collection and a proliferation of smart grid concepts, including diverse and flexible electricity pricing schemes. Not surprisingly, an increased number of approaches have been proposed for its modeling and forecasting. In this work, we place our emphasis on three forecasting related issues. First, on the forecasting explainability, i.e. the ability to understand and explain to the user what shapes the forecast. This paper presents a practical methodology to facilitate decision-making for the development of ... more This paper presents a practical methodology to facilitate decision-making for the development of a renewable energy community (REC) in the municipality of Hersonissos in Crete, Greece. The impact of energy sharing produced from renewables through direct or indirect citizen participation presents an enormous opportunity to strengthen energy democracy and to alleviate energy poverty. Triggered by the latter being amongst the most essential goals for implementing policies towards low-carbon economies at the local level, the current study presents a step-by-step methodology to facilitate decision-making for building a municipality-led REC. Initially, potential sites and alternative sittings of photovoltaic (PV) plants are explored for detecting the optimal installation with respect to technical and possible legislative restrictions. Large sports centers are characterized by special energy demand profiles compared to other facili... more Large sports centers are characterized by special energy demand profiles compared to other facilities. The aim of this work is to assess the economic investment of photovoltaics (PVs) on a sport center microgrid using different charging methods and by efficiently exploiting the PV generation. The overall work is performed in the following three steps. The first step is the energy requirement analysis, the second focuses on a PEV charging strategy proposition in order to exploit the PV generation, grid electricity price, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), and the third step is the net present value (NPV) analysis of the PV investment in the different scenarios. The simulations showed that the proposed charging strategy increases the NPV. In addition, the increment of PEV penetration rate leads to the maximization of the NPV. The energy and costs analysis are carried out for an application case in the Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens.

For this paper an interesting and challenging innovation context is selected, namely the Greek construction sector, that represents a fusion of small organisation size, brutal economic climate and an array of attitudes towards innovation. Through a questionnaire with 92 managers and ten in-depth interviews, the findings indicate that the Greek construction sector is mainly comprised of micro firms and that the perceived CSFs for implementing innovation clusters is significantly different from those identified in the literature. This paper, through the development of a conceptual framework, questionnaires with 92 firms and interviews with 10 key firms, sought to investigate the critical success factors for the creation of a cluster within the challenging context of the Greek construction sector.
