Ice Cream Celebrated

February 2021 - the NZ Ice Cream Association launched the inaugural NZ Ice Cream Month, including Barker’s Favourite NZ Scoop Store and Taste of NZ Summer promotions.

Radio NZ's Karen Hay featured this History and website on her programme: "Scooped: The history of ice cream in New Zealand".

11 March 2021 - Little ‘Lato in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter was voted Barker’s Favourite NZ Scoop Shop, the country’s favourite place to buy ice cream.

- Little 'Lato.

Little ‘Lato was created in December 2017 by Chief Gelato Maker, Hannah Wood whose dream for Little ‘Lato was sparked after she received a scholarship to study at the Carpigiani Gelato University in Italy in 2015.

“ I’d always loved ice cream but in Italy I fell head over heels in love with gelato! Gelato still wasn’t that well known in New Zealand, especially compared to other countries around the world, so I was inspired to help Kiwis fall in love with gelato."

She says flavour creation is her favourite part of the job. Hannah loves the challenge of taking foods and putting them in gelato. Banana & Peanut Butter, Pina Colada, Hot Cross Bun, banana & bacon French toast as well as flavours not expected in gelato, such as Massaman Curry gelato which won the Open Creative Trophy at the New Zealand Ice Cream Awards in 2019.

April 2021 - Emerald Foods was purchased by Hart family food business Walter & Wild. Emerald manufactured well known ice-cream brands New Zealand Natural, Killinchy Gold, Zilch and Chateau, as well as the licence to operate the Movenpick brand in this country.

- New Zealand Natural Ice Cream Limited.

The five ice cream brands were placed together in a new company, New Zealand Natural Ice Cream Limited.

1 June 2022- The NZ Ice Cream Association announced a new name for its annual awards - the New Zealand Ice Cream & Gelato Awards. The new name recognised the continued growth of gelato alongside ice cream in New Zealand, and the Awards, celebrating 25 years of competition, were further expanded with the addition of two exciting new categories, Novelties and Innovation

Sunday 30 October 2022 - Rush Munro's scooped it's last ice cream at it's iconic, 90-year-old Heretaunga Street West ice cream gardens (below). The business will continue to operate from a site at Albert Square in central Hastings but, tragically, one of the Hawke's Bay's most-loved heritage buildings is to be demolished to make way for a petrol station.

31 August 2023 - Queenstown's Patagonia Chocolates scooped up one of two Supreme Awards at the New Zealand Ice Cream and Gelato Awards 2023, which were announced at a ceremony on Thursday night, with their Hazelnut Cremino ordained Formula Foods Supreme Champion - Boutique. Originally a chocolate shop, Patagonia was opened by co-owners Alex Gimenez and wife Lorena Giallonardo, who relocated from Argentina to Queenstown in 2003. They have been making ice cream since 2007.

- Patagonia Chocolates.

Chief judge Jackie Matthews said the house-roasted Central Otago hazelnuts “provided a delicate and truly authentic flavour, which, combined with a superbly crafted and well-made ice cream, is simply stunning, deserving of the Supreme Award”.

Kerepehi's Allied Faxi New Zealand Food Co. won the competition’s second Supreme Award, Americold Supreme Champion - Commercial with their outstanding G'nature Vanilla ice cream.

In all, the 2023 NZ Ice Cream and Gelato Awards crowned 16 Trophy winners and awarded 183 medals; 64 Gold, 74 Silver and 45 Bronze.

Island Gelato won the 2023 Champion Gelato Trophy.

Legend: The NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards

Now in their 25th year, the NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards have been run by the NZ Ice Cream Association since 1997, celebrating Aotearoa’s finest and sharing the results with Kiwi ice cream lovers.

Since the Awards began, New Zealand’s ice cream industry has continually evolved, with gelato, sorbet and frozen desserts now taking their places on the winners’ podium.

From just two expert judges in the early days, the Awards now use a panel of 20 judges.

Over two days, they allocate points for Appearance (10 points), Body and Texture (30 points), Flavour (50 points) and Melting Properties (10 points). Gold Awards are given to entries with more than 95 points, Silver Awards to those between 90 and 95 points.

Kids Choice category submissions are judged by an invited panel of school children.

Official Ice Cream Judges, 2013

From the Gold Awards, winners in each category are found, and from these, two Supreme Award winners are chosen - one Boutique and one Commercial.

In 2023, Head Judge Jackie Matthews, supported by a panel of 20 judges and 10 stewards assessed 270 New Zealand ice creams, gelatos, sorbets and dairy-free frozen products across 14 different categories.
