They need to know the mental math patterns that are involved in the break apart addition strategy.

When students find patterns in the certain equations I showed in the video, that’s when it turns into a mental math skill.

Students can:
• break apart a number into its expanded form. 41=40+1
• add a tens number to another tens number. 50+30=80
• add a tens number to a single digit number. 30+6=36
• add a tens number to a teen number. 60+13=73

Before I teach any new strategy, I am always thinking about what patterns and mental math skills are involved with it.

I like to pre-teach these skills and patterns for a couple days before our lesson as our routine math warm-up.
