Trek Winter Trails

The best way to set out on a winter hike in Western Montana is to strap on a pair of snowshoes and trek the terrain. It’s pretty simple to get the hang of, easy on the budget and anyone can play. This also makes it a great winter activity for families and other groups, like reunions and corporate retreats.

Take a ranger-guided snowshoe trek through the snowy splendor of Glacier National Park or a guided trip with Glacier Adventure Guides or Whitefish Outfitters, or go your own way…just be sure to stay on the trails. Here’s a map to help you out. Many travelers to Montana wisely plan their trips to include both of our national parks: Glacier and Yellowstone. To help make the most of your time, we’ve put together several road-trip itineraries that offer authentic park-to-park experiences, including snowshoeing. For inspiration, visit Glaciers to Geysers.

We also have local outfitters and gear shops who rent snowshoes and offer guided snowshoe tours. Check out our business listings below for more information.

Avalanche safety should always be top of mind when you’re headed into the deep stuff. Carry avalanche safety gear, know the red flags of an unstable snowpack, check the avalanche forecast, and get educated in avalanche safety.
