Number lines are a great way for children to learn addition and subtraction. When teaching elementary school students to count, number lines are also useful.
According to definition, a number line is a (usually horizontal) straight line marked by numbers which indicate equally long segments or intervals. Especially in the 1st grade and 2nd grade, number lines are used for counting and for basic math operations. A number line can start from 0 or 1 and can go to 10, 20 or even 100.
A special case of number line is a blank number line. Also known as an open number line, it is used to count to larger numbers, but also in strategies involving addition and subtraction with 2 digit or 3 digit numbers.
