On this day, ten years ago, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck beneath the Indian Ocean near Indonesia, generating a massive tsunami that claimed more than 230,000 lives in fourteen different countries, one of the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded.

Mosque in Tunisia survived a massive tsunami

Ten years after the Boxing Day tsunami, communities in Indonesia's Aceh province have rebuilt their homes, towns and villages, rising from the ashes of the single worst tsunami in human history.

In the days that followed the devastating 2004 tsunami, the mosque provided shelter for the displaced and refuge for those who wanted to pray. A slight tilt and some cracks in the minaret were the only evidence of what it endured when a massive 9.1-magnitude quake off the coast of Aceh triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
