Abstract. Recent theories of universal algorithmic intelligence, combined with the view that the ... more Abstract. Recent theories of universal algorithmic intelligence, combined with the view that the world can be completely specified in mathematical terms, have led to claims about intelligence in any agent, including human beings. We discuss the validity of assumptions and claims made by theories of universally optimal intelligence in relation to their application in actual robots and intelligence tests. Our argument is based on an exposition of the requirements for knowledge of the world through observations. In particular, we will argue that the world can only be known through the application of rules to observations, and that beyond these rules no knowledge can be obtained about the origin of our observations. Furthermore, we expose a contradiction in the assumption that it is possible to fully formalize the world, as for example is done in digital physics, which can therefore not serve as the basis for any argument or proof about algorithmic intelligence that interacts with the w...
This contribution investigates whether Hegel’s critique of social contract theory is still applic... more This contribution investigates whether Hegel’s critique of social contract theory is still applicable to contemporary contract theory proposed by, e. g., Rawls and Nozick. At first sight, they seem to have overcome the problems identified by Hegel because Rawls and Nozick appropriate the social contract as something essentially rational and normative (though in different ways). I argue, however, that for Hegel, their appeal to rational argumentation is not compatible with the concreteness of human individuals. A revised reading of the master/ bondsman-relation, emphasizing the role of the “fear of death”, shows the limited scope of contemporary contract theory.

Heeft de teloorgang van het Christendom in Europa het (zelf)vertrouwen in de Europese cultuur ond... more Heeft de teloorgang van het Christendom in Europa het (zelf)vertrouwen in de Europese cultuur ondermijnd? In mijn antwoord op deze vraag ga ik in op het moderne individualisme en de centrale rol van individualiteit in het Christendom. Ik concludeer dat niet het individualisme het probleem van onze tijd is, maar eerder onze moraliserende en problematiserende omgang met individualiteit. Zelfs het liberalisme blijkt de individuele vrijheid uiteindelijk te verdringen.

I pointed out a contradiction in his interpretation of Hegel's theory of recognition and I argued that Kant's practical philosophy is in fact a criticism of discursive truth.
