a direct relation with the emotions of the dance, but also
through this, you make direct contact and learn to relate
with people; there is a social life made of comments, per-

Short Story
The Lame Woman second, neither in the others; suddenly I felt that was that generous
world which patiently waited for the last tears to roll to receive me
in its arms.

I didn’t ask you for anything in exchange of what I gave you; I think
you imagined that you had to compensate somehow.

The best milonguera….me, the lame woman, the best milonguera,
at first I didn’t want to believe it. I consented to it sensing the fail-
ure, maybe to be longer by your side.
Your love for tango, maybe for me, your longing for proving your-
self, for being also the best, I don’t know exactly what it was…but I
do know it was…it was not impossible.
You were able to balance the weight in my body up to the point of
almost making the difference in my legs disappear, and not only to
pivot, you taught me to fly with my feet together, smoothly chang-

leg or the other, the high voleos or the low ones with a crowded

secrets from years on the dance floor. You gave me all, as I gave you
all once.
I was surprised when I felt the meek lightness of my body and, VACACIONES - VACATIONS

that from your breast, your left arm on my right arm or your right
arm on my back, but also the inexistent lead of the mind, that of
the intention of the step. Sure I was surprised, and weren’t you?
I learnt how to step making a figure in every gap you left me, in
every blank, pause or silence. The beats you gave me, after show-
ing them off, were thanked by my embrace and my left hand with
caresses received by your back, your neck or your hair.
Getting it took some time, who can say how long? As for me, from the
distance, it looked like a sigh, such a short time when I see the result.
Mi first night at the milonga, a heart was not enough, nor in the
