VYGOTSKY:
− Social, cultural environment is important for the learning and development of children. (el
entorno social y cultural es importante para el aprendizaje y el desarrollo de los niños)
− Vygotsky (1962) turned teachers and parents’ attention to the powerful influence of the social
context. (Vygotsky dirigió la atención de los maestros y los padres a la poderosa influencia del
contexto social)
− He explored what chirlen were capable of achieving with the help and support of a more
knowledgeable partner. (exploró lo que los niños eran capaces de lograr con la ayuda y el
apoyo de un compañero más informado)
− Vygotsky: the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). (Vygotsky: la zona de desarrollo próximo)
• Zone between the current knowledge of the child and the potential knowledge
achievable with some help from a more expert peer or adult. (zona entre el
conocimiento actual del niño y el conocimiento potencial alcanzable con alguna
ayuda de un compañero o adulto más experto)
BRUNER:
− Bruner (1983) showed that Chomsky’s ideas of set of universal rules couldn’t function without
the help of an adult. (Bruner demostró que las ideas de Chomsky sobre el conjunto de reglas
universales no podían funcionar sin la ayuda de un adulto)
− Language learning: (aprendizaje de idiomas)
• A child. (un niño)
• Set of universal grammar rules. (conjunto de reglas gramaticales univerasles)
• Habit, practice and reinforcement. (hábito, práctica y refuerzo)
• Support given by other speakers. (apoyo dado por otros oradores)
− Bruner thinks children learn effectively through scaffolding by adults. (Bruner piensa que los
niños aprenden de manera efectiva a través de andamios por parte de adultos)
ACQUISITION
− -Acquisition is the product of a subconscious process very similar to the process children
undergo when they acquire their first language. It requires meaningful interaction in the
target language- natural communication- in which speakers are concentrated not in the
form of their utterances, but in the communicative act.( La adquisición es el producto de un
proceso subconsciente muy similar al proceso que experimentan los niños cuando
adquieren su primer idioma. Requiere una interacción significativa en el idioma de destino,
la comunicación natural, en la que los hablantes se concentran no en la forma de sus
expresiones, sino en el acto comunicativo)
− -It is the subsconcious development of language that takes place as a result of interaction
and input. An unintentional process. (Es el desarrollo subconsciente del lenguaje que tiene
lugar como resultado de la interacción y la entrada. Un proceso involuntario )
LEARNING
− Learning is the product of formal or direct instruction and it comprises a conscious process
which results in conscious knowledge ‘about’ the language, for example knowledge of
grammar rules. (El aprendizaje es el producto de la instrucción formal o directa y comprende
un proceso consciente que resulta en un conocimiento consciente "sobre" el idioma, por
ejemplo, el conocimiento de las reglas gramaticales)
− It is the result of direct instruction in the rules, structures, or lexis of the language. Often an
intentional process. (Es el resultado de la instrucción directa en las reglas, estructuras o léxico
de la lengua. A menudo un proceso intencional)
2.1. HOW DO YOUNG CHILDREN LEARN THEIR MOTHER TONGUE?: (¿cómo aprenden los niños
pequeños su lengua materna?)
− The first thing we should do to understand how children learn is to think about how children
acquire their first language. (lo primero que debemos hacer para entender cómo aprenden
los niños es pensar en cómo los niños adquieren su primer idioma)
− Years and hours of comprehensible input: (años y horas de entrada comprensible)
• Comprehensible input means that children should be able to understand the essence
of what is being said o presented to them: “facial expressions, gestures, intonation, visual
clues, drawing something, using a graphic organizer” (la entrada comprensible significa
que los niños deben ser capaces de entender la esencia de lo que se les dice o se les
presenta: “expresiones faciales, gestos, entonación, pistas visuales, dibujar algo, usar un
organizador gráfico”)
BABIES
− Hear voices from the time they are born. (escuchar voces desde el momento en que nacen)
− Play with sounds and practice making sounds. (juega con sonidos y pratica hacienda sonidos)
− Listen to sounds and respond to voices. (escucha sonudos y responde a voces)
− Begin to associate sounds with what they see. (comienzan a asociar sonidos con lo que ven)
− Begin to use language to interact and get what they want. (comienzan a usar el lenguaje
para interactuar y obtienen lo que quieren)
− Babbling (from birth to 8 months): (balbuceos, desde el nacimiento hasta los 8 meses)
• Babies make sounds. (los bebés hacen sonidos)
• Consonant – vowels – reduplications (eg: ga-ga, ma-ma).
− First word (from 11 months): (primera palabra, a partir de 11 meses)
• One word phase: children may point to something and say the word, one word is
enough for a whole sentence (e.g. 'that' for "I want that one“). (Fase de una palabra:
los niños pueden señalar algo y decir la palabra, una palabra es suficiente para una
oración completa (por ejemplo, 'eso' para "quiero ese").
− Two words (18 months – 2 years): (dos palabras, 18 meses-2 años)
• Two word phase: two words is enough for a whole sentence e.g. 'that one' or 'ball
table' for 'the ball is on the table’. (Fase de dos palabras: dos palabras son suficientes
para una oración completa, por ejemplo, "esa" o "mesa de bolas" para "la pelota está
sobre la mesa")
• Children don’t have a very big vocabulary so they overextend the meaning, eg. : ‘cat’
for anything furry with 4 legs or ‘car’ for any vehicle. (Los niños no tienen un vocabulario
muy grande, por lo que extienden demasiado el significado, por ejemplo: 'gato' para
cualquier cosa peluda con 4 patas o 'coche' para cualquier vehículo)
− Three-word phase: (fase de tres palabras)
• They are more likely to use small grammatical words, but may still get words in the
wrong order eg. : ‘that one spoon’. (Es más probable que usen palabras gramaticales
pequeñas, pero aún pueden obtener palabras en el orden incorrecto, por ejemplo. :
'esa cuchara')
• From here on children continue to develop vocabulary (about age 2,5-3 years) and
are able to speak in mainly full sentences, gaining hundreds of new words each month.
Meaning narrows as they learn more words. (A partir de aquí, los niños continúan
desarrollando vocabulario (alrededor de la edad de 2,5-3 años) y pueden hablar
principalmente en oraciones completas, ganando cientos de palabras nuevas cada
mes. El significado se estrecha a medida que aprenden más palabras)
− Phonological, syntactic, lexical nouns (3-4 years). (sustantivos fonológicos, sintácticos, léxicos,
3-4 años)
− Syntactic, lexical complexity (6-12 years). (complejidad sintáctica y léxica, 6-12 años)
*At each phase it is important to talk to the child and ‘answer’ them when they make noises so that
they develop turn-taking in conversation. (En cada fase es importante hablar con el niño y
"responderle" cuando haga ruidos para que desarrolle turnos en la conversación)
1.1. ORIGIN:
JAMES J. ASHER
− A professor of psychology at San Jose State University (profesor de psicología en la universidad
de San Jose). TPR in the mid -60s- (respuesta física social a mediados de los años 60).
− He observed that there the dropout rate of second language students in traditional programs
was quite high. (95%). (observó que allí la tasa de deserción de los estudiantes de segunda
lengua en los programas tradicionales era bastante alta, 95%)
− Many people have problems when learning a second language, but no trouble while learning
their first language. (muchas personas tienen problemas a la hora de aprender un segundo
idioma, pero no hay problemas mientras aprenden su primer idioma)
CONCLUSIONS:
•Teachers used different methodology in L1 and L2. (los profesores utilizaron diferentes
metodologías en L1 y L2)
• He realised that stress was a factor in the second language learning enviroment. (se dio
cuenta de que el estrés era un factor en el entorno de aprendizaje de un segundo idioma)
− From his conclusions, Asher decided to create a stress-free approach to learning a second
language. ( a partir de sus conclusiones, Asher decidió crear un enfoque libre de estrés para
aprender un segundo idioma)
− Asher put emphasis on: (Asher puso énfasis en: )
• Innate biological learning language programme (programa de aprendizaje de idiomas
biológico innato)
• The two hemispheres of the brain (left and right) (los dos hemisferios del cerebro)
• low stress. (bajo estrés)
− THE HUMAN BRAIN→ It has a biological programme for acquiring any natural language and
Total Physical Response (TPR) is based on this. (el cerebro humano cuenta con un programa
biológico para la adquisición de cualquier lenguaje natural y en él se basa la TPR)
1.1.2. TPR AND THE RIGHT BRAIN: (TPR y el hemisferio derecho del cerebro)
− Through MOVEMENT the right brain “believes” that information and retains it. (Swimming, riding
a bike…). (a través del movimiento, el cerebro derecho “cree” esa información y la retiene.
Ej.: nadar, andar, montar en bicicleta…)
A NEW WAY OF THINKING ABOUT L2 LEARNING: (una nueva forma de pensar sobre el aprendizaje
de la segunda lengua)
− "Babies don't learn by memorizing lists; why should children or adults?" (los bebés no aprenden
memorizando listas; ¿Por qué deberían hacerlo los niños o los adultos?)
1.2.2. ROLE OF LEARNER & TEACHER: (papel del alumno y del profesor)
TEACHER: active role.
− Students listen attentively and respond physically to the commands given. (los estudiantes
escuchan atentamente y responden físicamente a las órdenes dadas)
For this reason, a teaching technique based on commands is often used with young children. (por
esta razón, a menudo se utiliza una técnica de enseñanza basada en órdenes con niños
pequeños)
Examples:
1.3. IMPLEMENTATION:
-How can we implement TPR effectively? (¿cómo podemos aplicar el TPR de manera eficaz?)
-It is necessary to plan regular sessions with a logical order and keep some things in mind: (es
necesario planificar sesiones regulares con un orden lógico y tener en cuenta algunas cosas: )
STEP 1:
− Students are given a command. (Review vocabulary) (A los estudiantes se les da una orden,
repasar vocabulario)
− First, the teacher does the actions and says the phrases. This stage is repeated until students
can connect words with actions. (primero, el maestro hace las acciones y dice las frases. Esta
etapa se repite hasta que los estudiantes puedan conectar las palabras con las acciones)
STEP 2:
− Students are given the commands in the same order but without a model to copy. (a los
estudiantes se les dan los commandos en el mismo orden, pero sin un modelo para copiar)
− Give new commands and vary the sequence of commands. (dé nuevos commandos y varíe
la secuencia de commandos)
− Get different students to “act” the actions while you just say the phrases. (pida a diferentes
estudiantes que “actúen” las acciones mientras usted solo dice las frases)
STEP 3:
− Students listen to the instructions in *JUMBLED ORDER. (los estudiantes escuchan las
instrucciones en orden desordenado)
STEP 4:
− After ten hours of instruction, the students are welcome to give commands to the teacher.
(ROLE REVERSAL). (después de diez horas de instrucción, los estudiantes pueden dar órdenes
al maestro (inversión de roles)).
− Also, reading and writing activities can be introduced at this point. This reinforces the meaning
of the word. (además, en este punto se pueden introducer actividades de lectura y estructura.
Esto refuerza el significado de la palabra)
1.4. ADVANTAGES:
− It is fun and easy to implement. (es divertido y fácil de implementar)
− It doesn’t require a great deal of preparation on the part of the teacher. (no require mucha
preparación por parte del professor)
− Language is remembered easily and long-term. (el lenguaje se recuerda fácilmente y a largo
plazo)
− Instant reaction. Stop over-analazying (“going with the flow”). (Reacción instantánea. Deja de
analizar en exceso (“ir con la corriente”)).
− Reduces pressure for students. Increases confidence. (reduce la presión de los estudiantes.
Aumenta la confianza)
− Addresses weakness: listening & speaking in English is normally due to teaching methods and
school environment. (Aborda las debilidades: escuchar y hablar en inglés normalmente se
debe a los métodos de enseñanza y al entorno escolar)
1.5. DISADVANTAGES:
− TPR is used for beginners, not higher levels. (TPR se utiliza para principiantes, no para niveles
superiores)
− Students are not given the opportunity to express themselves in a creative way. (A los
estudiantes no se les da la oportunidad de expresarse de una manera creativa)
− It can be a challenge for shy students. (Puede ser un desafío para los estudiantes tímidos)
− Certain target languages may not be suited to this method. (Reading and writing). (Es posible
que algunos idiomas de destino no sean adecuados para este método. (Lectura y escritura))
1.5. ACTIVITIES:
When you ask children in English to do something you are: (cuando les pides a los niños en inglés
que hagan algo, estás: )
TPR is when children listen and follow a whole sequence of instructions, doing what the teacher
says. (la TPR es cuando los ninños escucgan y siguen toda una secuencia de instrucciones,
haciendo lo que el maestro dice)
- At first, use gestures and demonstrate what you want them to do. (al principio, usa gestos y
demuestra lo que quieren que hagan)
LISTEN & DO ACTIVITIES: LISTENING & IDENTIFYING (actividades de escuchar y hacer: escuchar e
identificar)
When children do `listen and identify´ activities they are: (cuando los niños realizan actividades de
“escuchar e identificar” son: )
- Making sense of English words and phrases. (dar sentido a las palabras y frases en inglés)
1. Talk to them about the things you want them to learn the names of. (habla con ellos sobre las
cosas de las que quieres que aprendan los nombres)
2. Ask them to point to or show the things when you name them. (pídeles que señales o muestren
las cosas cuando las nombres)
With older learners you can help them distinguish between: (en el caso de los alumnus mayores,
puede ayudarles a distinguir entre: )
*You don’t teach grammar, but you help them discover meaning. (no les enseña gramática, pero
les ayudas a descubrir el significado)
− Miming means acting silently, without speaking. (imitar significa actuar en silencio, sin hablar)
− Revise and consolidate topic words through mime. (revisar y consolidar palabras temáticas a
través de la mímica)
− Mime to rhymes and chants. (mimo con rimas y cantos)

clase, organizarlos en grupos)
*These activities: will help develop children’s thinking skills, help the child work from the most basic
use of language to more complex uses, can encourage sharing and co-operation and could form
a graded sequence of speaking activities for pupils working in groups. (Ayudará a desarrollar las
habilidades de pensamiento de los niños. Ayudar al niño a trabajar desde el uso más básico del
