UNIDAD 1 La lectura y los textos
Apuntes de clase: El proceso de lectura
entendemos a primera vista seguramente seleccionemos:
Almagro- Buenos Aires-ARTIST- VISUAL ARTIST - POET- PERFORMER-MURALIST-
COLOUR

diccionario (http://www.wordreference.com/es/).
Explosive Superclasico: two red cards and three goals.
On 05th November 2017, with the monumental Stadium coloured on red and white, the
superclasico was played. The winner: Boca, with two goals and some polemics.
Si seguimos con el título, éste nos dice “two red cards and three goals”.
Avancemos:
“with the monumental Stadium coloured on red and white”
b)
4) Sigamos con el texto “the superclasic was played”. Aquí nos encontramos con un verbo:
“play”. ¿En qué tiempo está conjugado? ¿Qué significa? Para resolverlo podemos ayudarnos
con el vocabulario.
La frase nos quedaría
c)
Summer
Autumn
Winter
Spring

1. Texto de lectura
Viví Francia: France or Buenos Aires?
French culture will be celebrated in Buenos Aires for one week starting 17th
September. Viví Francia includes a variety of events like cooking lessons, language
lessons and visits to famous buildings. The main idea: You can feel immediately in
France.
The French Embassy and the Alianza Francesa of Buenos Aires are organizing a lot
of events so make sure you got the full guide. However, here you can find our selection:
Visit the French Embassy: On 17th and 18th of September you can visit the beautiful
French embassy for free and visit the food festival ‘La Marche’ at the same time.
French cinema: You are really lucky if you like French films: ‘L’esquive’ will be shown
and and there will be other films on the screen like ‘Jeune et Jolie’ and ‘Berthe Morisot’.
Learn French: If you want to practice speaking French or learn it for the first time
there are also plenty of French conversation classes for speakers at different levels.
French cuisine: Visit the original French bakery: L’epi boulangerie where you can
watch how they prepare sourdough and make bread. There is also a French wine
tasting in Grand Cru on Thursday 22nd where you can try a selection of wines from
Bourgogne, Bordeaux and Vallé-du-Rhône.
Thus, it’s an event we must go!
Most of the events are free to enter but some require you to sign up beforehand, so
hurry up!
● Conectores
3. Conectores
The French Embassy and the Alianza Francesa of Buenos Aires are organizing a lot of events and
there is a full guide. However, here you can find our selection
La oración era: “Most of the events are free to enter but some require you to sign up beforehand,
so hurry up!”

» ACTIVIDAD 6
que contienen “will”.

vocabulario.

Free Food!
A restaurant leaves boxes of free food for the homeless after closing each night.
The healthy fast food is cooked in a place from London, called Joe’s, and left in the streets inside of boxes when
the bar close the doors.
The idea started when the staff from Joe’s realized that different kinds of people were waiting there to spend the
night in the hall of the bar.
The owners of this shop, asked clients to donate unwanted warm clothes so they can give it with the food, winters
are completely cold.
They have a list with the different kind of foods for each day of the week. For example, on Mondays they prepare
fish and chips, and Wednesdays tuna sándwiches with lettuce and tomatoe.
All this movement had encouraged a lot of other bars and restaurants around the zone to do the same, and think
about the homeless people.

Normally you go to an ice cream shop and ask for chocolate or dulce de leche flavours
but this new place it´s completely different.
It’s a nice place for those who en enjoy ice creame and alcohol.
Here you can try strange and eccentric flavours such as Mint Julep, or Fernet and Cola
in an ice cream. Located in Palermo this original ice creame shop offers the oportunity
to try a different and unique experience.
3. Texto 2
H2O+C2H6O+Milk, Right?
» ACTIVIDAD 11
“Normally you go to an ice cream shop and ask for chocolate or dulce de leche”
ahora, “but”.
“(…) we tried to unite alcohol and ice cream, two elements which a priori are against each other
– but we did it!”.
_______________________________________ pero __________________________________
» ACTIVIDAD 13
Texto 2
Anteriormente trabajamos conectores
de contraste como however y but.
No worries if you don’t want alcohol in your ice cream, you can still choose other flavours such as
Nutella, beetroot, white chocolate, and caramel flan. Thus, this ice cream shop is made for everyone!

Tiempos verbales
y rutinas, hechos generales, acciones repetidas o situaciones, emociones y deseos
permanentes.
I smoke / Yo fumo (hábito)
She works in London /Ella trabaja en Londres (permanencia)
aparece un verbo auxiliar: do/does.
(doES).
Pasado simple
My father died last year.
He lived in Fiji in 1976.
He won an Oscar last year.
¡A practicar!

verbos irregulares en simple past:

Presente perfecto
I have lived in Bristol since 1984 (es decir que todavía vivo allí.)
She has been to the cinema twice this week (La semana todavía no ha terminado
podría alguna vez más al cine.)

Futuro
(I think the weather will be great this summer / Creo que el clima en este verano será
grandioso).
● Para tomar decisiones espontáneas (I'm tired. I'll go to bed / Estoy cansado, iré a la
cama).
● Cuando hacemos promesas ( I promise I will go to the party / Te prometo que iré a
la fiesta).
● Cuando ofrecemos algo (I will help you with your homework/ Te ayudaré con la tarea).

Negativos
no → no
not → negativo usado con verbos
nothing → nada
never → nunca
none → ninguno/a

Quorum sells art, but without the pretension. “Quorum is an store whose philosophy
is to have art that is accessible for everyone,” explains Olivier Leveaufre, one of the
owners. “Our goal was to create a pleasant space where people aren’t afraid to
come inside…in art galleries, people don’t want to go in. They say ‘it’s not my world,
I don’t know anything about art, it’s very expensive for me.’ We wanted something
different, a warm space where people can come in only to look around if they want
to, they can ask about the prices…We wanted to have a more direct link between
people and art.”
When Quorum first opened the owners tapped into their network of artist friends
to find creators who would be interested in selling their work in the store. They were
quickly overrun with offers. As Carrera (Maria) puts it, “we started calling on our
circle of artists and it grew very quickly. People recommended more artists, and we
met people at exhibitions and galleries.” But they also received work from artists
they hadn’t known before. “A few artists we didn’t know started sending us works,
and we still receive works from many artists. And we liked some of them, and they
are now for sale in Quorum,” says Leveaufre..
Quorum plans to branch out in the future, with events and an online store.
“We have two events planned this year. One in September will be with the artist
Sael, who works mostly with strong, colorful lines. It will be a very cool event
because he is going to work with the entire façade of the building and the terrace
we have upstairs,” says Leveaufre. The terrace won’t be open to the public, but
Sael’s work will be projected live downstairs. Another event in December will
showcase engravers from La Fabrica de Estampas working directly in Quorum.
The store is hard to miss on San Telmo’s Defensa Street: the façade is painted
bright blue and can be seen from down the block. It is a great place to buy a
gift or find interesting pieces to decorate your PH. If you’re strolling through
San Telmo, don’t miss the chance to visit Quorum and get a sample of Buenos
Aires’ thriving art scene for yourself.
Quorum is on Defensa 894 and is open weekly from Tuesday to Sunday,
11.30am to 8pm.

2) Barrido

"more" delante:
Expensive (caro) - more expensive than (más caro que).
Aquí veremos en particular los prefijos negativos.
Playas
Buenos Aires
When Buenos Aires gets really hot, the proper thing to do is join the mass porteño
exodus and go to the coast. But before you swap 9 de Julio for a view of the sea,
read this guide to find the perfect beach for you. Keep in mind that the majority of
Argentines travel in January and February, when accommodation prices are highest
and the beaches most crowded.
Atlantic Coast
In Argentina, the most popular option for holidays is the Atlantic Coast of Buenos
Aires Province. For family vacations, the northern beaches of Partido de la Costa,
the closest to BA, are a bit of a favourite. With attractions like Sea World, a water
park, and prices lower than in other areas along the coast, it has a relaxed vibe
but with plenty of things to do.
Tuyú down to Costa Esmeralda, and has an assortment of bigger towns and smaller
seaside resorts.
If you are looking for a big city and different beaches, the obvious choice is Mar
del Plata. Considering that about half of the total population of BA moves to ‘Mardel’
in summer, walking around the city feels like walking along Av. Corrientes on peak
hour – but with the ocean nearby. The city’s small beaches get impossibly crowded,
but if you want nightlife, theatre, people-watching this is the place to be.
Mar de las Pampas is a good option for those looking for a more upscale kind of
holiday. Fancy hotels, good restaurants, and plenty of cute shops set in the middle
of a forest by the sea, it’s as good as it gets on the Atlantic Coast. A similar style
can be found in the small, foresty towns of Cariló and Valeria del Mar and Pinamar.
While it’s impossible to fully escape the crowds in summer (especially in January),
those looking for relaxation could try the beaches south of Necochea, such as
Claromecó, Orense, or Monte Hermoso (touted as “the only place in the country
where you can see the sun come up and go down in the sea”).
Finally, and moving further south, those willing to venture out to the coast of
the Río Negro province should head out to Las Grutas, for many the best beach in
Argentina, blessed with clear, warm water, and a very different vibe to that of its
northern neighbours.

“We live here, Argentina is our country, it has a big superficie and very different
landscapes.”
We live here → Nosotros vivimos aquí.
c) Por último nos encontramos con “it has a big superficie (...)”.
Argentina.
It has a big superficie (...)
“We live here, Argentina is our country, it has a big superficie."
2. Los océanos
No Blue, No Green
Oceans are key to sustaining life on this planet, and neglecting their care is today,
more than ever, not an option.
By Martina Sasso - Feb 19, 2018 at 12:57
The ocean serves as the pulse of our planet’s life. It regulates climate, generates
more than 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe, stores the carbon dioxide that we
produce in excess, and sustains a large part (80 percent) of the planet’s biodiversity.
It may sound big, but it also rings true: Without blue, there is no green – without
oceans, there is no life.
Unfortunately, the sea is under threat; and so we’re losing our planet’s blue heart. For
many years we turned our back to the ocean, and now the consequences are becoming
more and more visible. Environmental studies estimate that by 2050, there will be more
plastic than fish in the sea. In addition to this, about 90 percent of the biggest fishes
have disappeared.
Argentina’s jurisdictional waters cover 36 percent of the country’s territory.
However, just three percent is included in marine protected areas. The existing
marine reserves are all coastal but just one (Namuncurá – Burdwood Marine
Protected Area, established in 2013) protects deep waters. As one of the signing
countries of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Argentina’s compromise is
having 10 percent of its waters as protected by 2020. Thus, our country is taking an
important step in the right direction to protect not just what we can see – but also
what remains hidden in the ocean’s depths.
Outside of the water, a regular, smaller starfish can be usually seen – but in the
The way to avoid this of happening is creating awareness and pushing for
protection. With this in mind, the Sin Azul No Hay Verde movement was created,
and it strives to promote the creation of the first National Marine Parks in Argentina.
These parks will serve as a fundamental and effective legal tool for conservation,
creating awareness among all Argentines on how important it’s to have a firm
commitment in regards to protecting the Argentine waters. It’s easier to convince
someone to cherish what they can see and visit, but it’s important for everyone to
understand and actively participate even when that’s not the case.
The marine protected areas benefit the adaptability to climate change by protecting
the habitats and species responsible for storing carbon dioxide in the sea. They
protect biodiversity; they are a refuge for oceanic ecosystems and allow marine
resources to recover. They also protect cultural and archaeological sites; restore
commercial fish stocks, and stimulate scientific research.
During 2017, Sin Azul No Hay Verde worked on the bill that establishes the
creation of two new marine protected areas: the “Yaganes” Marine National Park,
Strict National Marine Reserve and National Marine Reserve (69,000 square km)
and the ampliation of the “Namuncurá – Burdwood Bank II” Strict National Marine
Reserve and National Marine Reserve (29,000 square km). Both marine parks
will be located on the Southern Patagonian sea, aiming to be a step on the right
direction towards protection and conservation, as well as the first of many more.

1) “Neglecting their care is today, more than ever, not an option?"
2) “Due to its wide continental shelf, it is one of the most productive ocean areas on the planet.”
3) “Today, its biggest threats are: overfishing, illegal and incidental fishing, and pollution.”
1) “It is one of the most productive ocean areas on the planet.” Superlativo / Comparativo
2) “About 90 percent of the biggest fishes have disappeared.” Superlativo / Comparativo

Almost ten years have passed since the enactment of the Forest Law, an essential tool
to solve the forest emergency our country is suffering. Although in the last three years
deforestation has halved, the law is not being enforced as it should: since its sanction, at
the end of 2007, 2,403,240 hectares were dismantled in the country, of which more than
750,000 were protected forests. This evidence reaffirms the urgent need to have a law
that penalizes those who deforest illegally. Today, for destroying areas forbidden by law,
derisory fines are paid, that are only change for the big businessmen. Destroyed hectares
prove and make evident that it is not enough.
The area of destroyed forests between January and June of this year in Salta, Santiago
del Estero, Formosa and Chaco surpassed the surface of 45 thousand hectares, and 42
percent occurred in areas where it was prohibited. The situation is not encouraging. Many
businessmen dismount where they can not, paying a derisory fine, or getting a permit
to do so. The law clearly states that in yellow and red areas no clearing permits can be
granted. Thus, complicity between governments and those who dismantle is increasingly
clear and evident. Politicians must understand once and for all that protecting forests is
neither a utopia nor a favor they should do us: it is their obligation.
Therefore, because we can not bear more tolerance to clearing and we can not be
indifferent to the destruction of our native forests, Greenpeace presented at the National
Congress the draft Law on the Protection of Native Forests, which establishes a penalty of
2 to 10 years of imprisonment to those who deforest without authorization or intentionally
cause a forest fire, and to public officials who collaborate in the crime. The violation of the
Forest Law is systematic and there is something that should be clear: those who deforest
illegally are not businessmen, they are delinquents.
Just as after 10 years of campaign Greenpeace along with other environmental
organizations have managed to have a Forest Law. Today we need another tool to solve
the forest emergency in our country. According to the United Nations, Argentina is among
the 10 countries that destroyed most of its forests in the last 25 years, with only 27
million hectares of native forests remaining, 27 percent of the original area. Forests are
our natural sponge and play a key role in the regulation of climate change. Deforestation

Frase:
Just as after 10 years of campaign Greenpeace, along with other environmental organizations,
have managed to have a Forest Law, today we need another tool to solve the forest emergency
in our country.
PASADO PRESENTE RELACIÓN
Si
leemos bien, a la ley (de forestación)
• Las siguientes:
“At the end of 2007,2,403,240 hectares were dismantled in the country” → A finales de
2007, 2,403,240 hectáreas fueron desmontadas en el país.
Reflexionemos…
punto.
• which
• their
• they

Algunos
adverbios con los cuales trabajaremos son:
Always: siempre
Usually: usualmente
Often: a menudo
Sometimes: a veces
Never: nunca

1. Pets are great companions. There's no doubt about it, Researches show that
living with our lovely animals, like dogs, cats, that are the most common ones,
provide some health benefits. For example: help lower blood pressure and anxiety
problems. Not only help with our health, but they always make us feel happy! Let's
talk about the other benefits
2. They are allergy fighters. People used to think that if you had a pet in your house,
people around the animal were usually more likely to become allergic to the pet.
3. However, a lot of researches have suggested that kids that grow up in a home
with “furred animals” will have less risks of allergies, asthma, and eczemas, because
they developed they immune system chemicals, making it stronger.
4. Pets helps aged people. Elderly people who live alone feel the companion
when they have a pet, and provides exercise. They also help people like Alzheimer’s
patients, they are more relaxed if there is an animal at home.
5. People who have heart diseases or that suffered heart attacks live longer than
those without pets. Although they have this condition forever, being pet owners
become them people with less signs of triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
FIRST THINGS FIRST…¡dice el dicho!
. . . . ¿Qué nos dice el
título? ¿Hace referencia a alguna de estas imágenes?
Y llegamos al famoso… Momento Cognado!
HOWEVER - EVEN / ALTHOUGH - IN DESPITE OF - EVEN - YET
I ate a lot of fast food (_______) I did exercise
I told him to choose the green dress (_________) he chose the rose one.
(_________) im not tall, I am beautiful.
She loves painting (________) she gets all dirty.
(_________) all the danger, I will always follow you.
» ACTIVIDAD 17
correspondiente.
RECORDEMOS: How OFTEN…?
“Cuán a menudo…?”
always - never - sometimes - often - usually
» ACTIVIDAD 20
DUCK - DOG - RABBIT - LION - WOLF - GIRAFFE - ELEPHANT - CAT - ROOSTER - COW - SHEEP
4. En terpia
Let’s Talk
1.World Health Organization (WHO), estimates over 300 million people in the world
are currently depressed , in response of those numbers, this organizacion launched
an awareness program, called “Let’s talk”.
2.Although Buenos Aires is famous for the quantity of psychologists and
psychiatrists, The Argentine Department of Health estimates 25 percent of people
will experience mental illness at some point of their lives. However, 8 out of every 10
people that suffer depression or another mental illness, do not continue a proper
treatment.
3.This is the cause of some prejudices that have been kept since forever. Going to
the psychologist meant that you were crazy. This misunderstood turned the mental
illness, psychologist and psychiatry a Taboo.
4.“Let’s talk” combats depression globally. Fights the misfortune of those mental
illness prejudices, promoting the consciousness, finding help, and speaking up your
issues with someone else you feel confidence with. The target is to knock down the
conventionalisms, and being fearless humans that encourage and support others
to talk.
» ACTIVIDAD 21
a. _____________ JUZGAR ________________
b. _____________ MANEJAR ______________
c. _____________ ENTENDER _____________

» ACTIVIDAD 24 Obligatoria
Health, Nutrition, and Food Sovereignty
8th April 2015 Lucía Hernández & Michalina Kowol
Yesterday, on World Health Day, the Second Conference on Health, Nutrition, and Food
Sovereignty took place at the University of Buenos Aires’ Medicine School. This year, the day
was dedicated to the memory of Dr Andrés Carrasco, an Argentine scientist who proved the
devastating effects that the chemical glyphosate has on humans.
The day consisted of a number of conferences, an agro-ecological food market, and many
cultural and recreational activities, where key topics such as malnutrition, obesity, chronic
disease prevention, and food safety were discussed.
Here, some comments from conference participants:
“We had over 1,200 people registered online and more than 100 that registered today. We feel so
accomplished,” said Pablo Rubino, one of the organisers. “The first year we did the conference in a
small classroom,” he added, “then a bigger one, and now we use the [faculty’s] main lecture hall.”
“Food is expensive, but if you’re spending $500, at least buy something that is good for you
[organic food] instead of all these processed foods.” Raúl Botessi from Iriarte Verde Cooperative.
“Sometimes we forget about earth, and that’s the origin of most of the food we eat.” Andrea
Graciano from Calisa Nutrition.

walking around the corner (photo: Lucía Hernández)
“Organic apples are more expensive, but definitely better for you, as they have no chemicals,
plus are more yummy and rich in flavour.” Pablo Rubino.
c) Verbos.
The first year (el año pasado) we did (nosotros hicimos) Simple Past
Now (ahora) we use (nosotros usamos) Simple Present
This year, the day was dedicated to the memory of Dr Andrés Carrasco
solos.
Párrafo 1:___________________________________________________________________
Párrafo 2:___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

Here we introduce a singular person from the Patagonia, people from his
neighbourhood call him “The many job’s man”
Héctor is forty-seven years old and lives with his wife named Emilia, but the
particular thing is that he has as nine jobs! He's a driver, a policeman, a barman, a
shop assistant, a hotel manager, an accountant, a fireman,a chef and a reporter.
Let’s know more about him:
He lives and works on Huemul island, in Río Negro. Only a hundred and ten people
live on that island and they all work very hard. The island is an important tourist
attraction, and many people visit it during the summer.
In the morning, Héctor always works at his small hotel with his wife. He prepares
breakfast for the guests and then checks the accounts and assists the guests. Then, he
works as a shop assistant at the local supermarket.
In the afternoon, Héctor helps at the police station and the fire station. Sometimes,
he works for the local newspaper as a reporter. He interviews local people and
writes articles about their lives.
At night, he cooks dinner for the hotel guests and mixes drinks for them at the
hotel bar. By the end of the day he usually feels exhausted but he never complains
about his life. He has a drink with his wife and goes to bed.
The next time we feel stressed, remember Hector!
» ACTIVIDAD 25

usando "more" delante:
Expensive (caro) - more expensive than (más caro que)
This house is smaller
than that house.
Siempre
se agrega "the" delante.
the largest.
consonante. big - the biggest.
usando las palabras "the most" delante.
expensive - the most expensive
beautiful - the most beautiful.
100 %
ALWAYS: siempre
USUALLY: usualmente
OFTEN: a menudo
SOMETIMES: a veces
0% NEVER: nunca
frequency adverb + verb
Ejemplos:
I always eat cereal for breakfast (Yo siempre como cereal para desayuno)
She usually exercises on mondays (Ella usualmente ejercita en los lunes)
They sometimes play here (Ellos en ocasiones juegan aquí)
We never buy oranges (Nosotros nunca compramos naranjas)
1) Con el verbo "to be", los adverbios de frecuencia usualmente van
después de este verbo.
"to be" auxiliar + frequency adverb
Ejemplos:
She is always happy (Ella está siempre feliz)
I am usually late for this class (Yo usualmente llego tarde en esta clase)
It is sometimes boring (Esto es algunas veces aburrido)
You are never on time (Tu/Ustedes nunca estas/están a tiempo)
Ejemplos:
Usually I'm late (Frecuentemente llego tarde)
Sometimes I watch TV (En ocasiones veo televisión)
The internet is slow sometimes (El internet esta lento algunas veces)
They go to eat pizza usually (Ellos van a comer pizza usualmente)
a) negativos
b) El -miss
A) Prefijos Negativos
-Algunos prefijos negativos comienzan con a-
affirmative negative
political apolitical
typical atypical
