There are some interesting fabric pieces to see at the National Gallery of Victoria Vienna Art and Design exhibition, although I could have done with more of Josef Hoffman's Wiener Werkstätte textile designs.

While Art Nouveau swept 1890s France and Belgium, in Vienna a slightly different style took hold.

Recently we are feeling inspired by the bold shapes and playful colors of Weiner Werkstatte textiles. The Wiener Werkstatte (Vienna Workshop) was an artistic collective based on an interest in eliminating the gap between fine art and crafts, combining both folk and modern techniques. Founded in 1903

*Josef Hoffmann* and *Adolf Loos* were an integral part of a period during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when long-established viewpoints on the arts would be vehemently challenged. There was a drive to renounce traditional modes of thinking about art, design and architecture and to present a modern mindset. Aligned with this was a growing interest in an international art trend and the formation of outspoken artist groups that were often akin to political parties.
