Description

Unleash the true potential of your Strat with the Seymour Duncan STK-S2 Hot Stack Strat Pickup. This powerhouse of a pickup is designed for guitarists who crave a beefier tone and robust output while maintaining the clarity and dynamics of a single-coil. The secret lies in its innovative design: a ceramic bar magnet surrounded by two stacked coils, which delivers enhanced sustain and superior string sensitivity. This configuration not only boosts the midrange and punch of your sound but also ensures that classic single-coil hum is a thing of the past.

Ideal for stage performances, the STK-S2 offers a strong attack and balanced string response, thanks to its overwound coils and blade design. This means no drop-outs during string bends and a consistent, rich tone that cuts through the mix with ease. Whether you're delivering searing solos or chunky rhythm parts, this pickup is engineered to give your guitar the extra push it needs to stand out.

Key Features:

  • Powerful ceramic magnet with dual stacked coils
  • Enhanced sustain and midrange punch
  • Blade design for even string balance and no drop-outs
  • Overwound for strong output and attack
  • Four conductor cable for versatile wiring options

The punch I expected with true strat qualities

I like to experiment with single-coil size pickups that are built around humbucker architecture. The Hot Stack seemed like a unique combination of Seymour Duncan's previous iterations of things like Hot and Cool Rails, but with a different approach. I like the single bar magnet for the same reason I like the stacked blade designs in my Hot and Cool Rails: less drop-outs when going for those big bends that I'm a fan of.

The way the coils are stacked in this model give it a really hard punch for higher output, but one thing I noticed is there is still a very traditional single-coil sound laying across the signal, but much thicker. Between coil tapping (I used the variable pot versus binary switch this time) and using a lower value filter capacitor on the tone knob, I was able to get some Greg Howe tones out of this pickup.

For the much heavier stuff I still defer to my Seymour Duncan TB-15 pickup, but the Hot Stack is still way up there in terms of shredability, and has that nice snappy sound that raises your tone above an overly lower-mid range pickup that plays a little muddy on certain amps.

????? a pickup shoud last forever... maybe the magnets might lose power, but if you don't fuck with her, a guitar pickup is a really simple, wee small tranducer that will work forever.

In a handwritten list Burton made for the orginal Metallica Fanclub in the summer of 1983, he lists his gear and modifications as follows:

"Right now, I'm using a Randall 300 watt head into: 1 Randall 1x18 cab and 1 road 2x18 cab."

"At this time I only use 2 effects. A Morley Power Wha Boost and an MXR Limiter."

"I play a Rickenbacker 4001 bass. The 2 stock pickups have been replaced as follows: In the bass position there's a "Gibson EB" pickup. In the treble position, there's a "Seymore Duncan Stacked Jazz" pickup. I have also had a 3rd pickup installed in the bridge. It's a "Seymore Duncan Stacked Strat." Both Duncan pickups are "Humbucking" in design so they help reduce unwanted noise."

similar sound

While there are obvious differences in the tone and output characteristics, the Hot Stack is similar in package architecture as well as responsiveness compared to the Hot Rails I use. Both are able to be coil-split and will fit in a conventional single-coil slot in a guitar's body cavity.
