Etymology
editFrom earlier *hánn, from Proto-Norse *hānaʀ, of uncertain origin. Perhaps a compound of *he- (corresponding to English he) and *ānaʀ (from Proto-Germanic *jainaz, corresponding to Gothic 𐌾𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (jains)) or even directly from *ānaʀ with h- added due to influence from the demonstrative pronoun hinn, or else perhaps directly inherited from Proto-Indo-European and answering to Ancient Greek κεῖνος (keînos).
The long vowel is preserved in the masculine dative hǫ́num and feminine nominative hǫ́n, both affected by u-umlaut (Proto-Norse *hānumʀ, *hānu).
