From Proto-Finnic *hattu (compare Ingrian hattu, Karelian hattu, Votic hattu), borrowed from Proto-Norse *ᚺᚨᛏᛏᚢᛉ (*hattuʀ) (compare Swedish hatt), from Proto-Germanic *hattuz (compare English hat).
