förra
Swedish
editEtymology
editFrom Old Swedish fyrre, from Old Norse fyrri, from Proto-Germanic *furizô, comparative of Proto-Germanic *furi, *furai.
Pronunciation
editAdjective
editförra (masculine förre)
- former, last, previous (the one in a sequence before the present)
- Den bilen ser inte något vidare ut, låt oss titta på den förra igen istället
- That car doesn't look very nice, let us instead have a look at the last one again
- förra året
- last year
- (archaic) first
- Det förra kapitlet
- The first chapter
Usage notes
edit- Just like English last, this adjective can only be used in attributive, definite form (det förra året = the last year), not in indefinite (ett förrt år = a last year) or predicative form (året var förrt = the year was last). For such cases, either use föregående (“preceding”) or forn (“old”), or rewrite to definite form (e.g. året var det förra = the year was the last one).
