From Proto-Turkic *iagïr (heavy). Possibly related to Azerbaijani ağrı (pain), or contaminated with the latter. Cognate with Crimean Tatar ağır (heavy), Old Turkic 𐰍𐰃𐰺 (ǧir¹ /⁠agïr⁠/, heavy), Turkish ağır (heavy).
