Unknown. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰm̥bʰ- (to dig), if the original meaning was "dyke created by excavating earth," see also Ancient Greek τάφος (táphos, tomb), ταφή (taphḗ), θάπτω (tháptō, bury).[1]
