Category:Skyscrapers by height
edithi, i think that's a great idea! When adding buildings to these categories in the future, I'll use this method. Cheers, --Quasipalm 17:51, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
- Cool, will do it now. Γνώθι Σεαυτόν 23:20, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
Ordering years numerically instead of alphabetically.
editI am now tidying up Category:Years in Ireland as the years come in alphabetical order. eg 1,19,190,1900,1901...1990,2,20,200,2000,2001 which is not really that useful.
I have recatalogued the pages from the 20 hundreds BC to AD 2007 for:
- Category:Years in Ireland
- Category:History of Ireland
- Category:Irish chronicles
- Category:Years in Mexico
- Category:Independent Mexico
- Category:Underpopulated (Year) in Mexico categories
(I am thinking that we could have a Category of each decade in Irish History, and then put these Decade Categories into the greater Category:Years in Ireland. This would give a balanced hierachy with only one sublevel, and about one page at the top (200-400 decades). AND only have 1 or 2 pages for each decade subCategory. Some of the out "Years in X" categories have far too many levels...)
I am currently working on:
- Category:Lists of religious leaders by year - specifically [[List of religious leaders in #]]
If there are any other [[Category:Years in X]] categories to clean up please update their talk pages, and add the name of the Category here so I can copyedit them at the same time.

re:Template:Year by category
editIt was not working on the Category:Elections by year categories, for example Category:2007 elections was appearing under Category:2007 under 20 rather than under E. This is possibly partially my fault for choosing bad variable names for the template: parent and subcat for example are rather confusing: subcat is optional, if ommited the category will appear directly in eg. 2007, or for something like Category:2007 in Ireland, you can select subcat=2007 by country, so that it appears with other country by year categories.
Parent is for the type of things: so Category:2007 in the United Kingdom, I have put parent=Years of the 21st century in the United Kingdom, so that all the years are grouped together.
Maybe if you try to implement the switch on "subcat" rather than "parent" it will work the way I think it supposed to. On the other hand maybe we sould redesign the template from scratch as it it's quite confusing :) Tim! 10:15, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
I'll take a look at the subcat and see what is a good fit. Maybe it can still be worked in. Cheers Γνώθι Σεαυτόν 11:29, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
Mass Category changes
editI have very, very temporarily blocked you. This is not a punishment but a very brief preventative block while other admins try to interpret your recent mass changes. The category changes are definitely outside of usual modifications, specifically your use of non-standard fonts. Please sit tight while we try to figure this out. --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 12:58, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- OK, before I continue rollback - what is the purpose of the changes? Why the unusual font? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jeffrey O. Gustafson (talk • contribs) 13:04, 14 February 2007 (UTC).
- Also, I get the intent of the changes, for grouping purposes - the issue is the non-standard and unnecessary font. You are unblocked, btw - please see additional discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Bizarre_category_modifications. --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 13:12, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, it's not an unusual "font", it's unusual Unicode characters, from the "Enclosed alphanumeric characters" range (U+2488 etc.) Apparently, the motivation was for the categories to be sorted numerically in the listing of their parent categories. There must be other ways of achieving that, though. Looking into it. Fut.Perf. ☼ 13:49, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- You could just prefix zeros to the sort keys of those entries that have less than four digits. Much easier, and for the great majority of entries >= 1000 you don't need to change anything. Fut.Perf. ☼ 13:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, Gnothi, you seem to have put a real big amount of work into this. A pity it's being rolled back. But it would have been better if you'd sought some input on such things in advance. Please let that not discourage you. Fut.Perf. ☼ 14:30, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks for the kind words. Having 2000 years index meerly with 0, 1 & 2 appeared to be a problem to me. Jeffrey O. Gustafson doesn't want hundreds, so I have no plans to repeat try to re index them into hundreds. (Maybe someone else could help me get all the approvals from wikipedia management?)
Question
editDear Γνώθι Σεαυτόν! Can you read and write in Greek? Thanks in advance for your reply!--DarDar (talk) 13:42, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
