Invitation to participate in a research
editHello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
Dick Pope (cinematographer)
editHi @Sunshineisles2:, I noticed on your recent edits to Dick Pope (cinematographer), that you deleted a reference from the British Society of Cinematographers, a reliable source.
Whilst I appreciate that The Guardian article was more detailed, there was no harm in listing an additional source for the subject's death without deleting the original reference. The Wiki article in question is short and could use more sources and information in the first place.
Please also be in no doubt – The Guardian most certainly do not have a superiority over other reliable sources. In fact, broadsheet obituaries are often written as second hand knowledge after becoming aware of original sources that give notice of death, like professional organisations such as the BSC, or other actor/trade unions.
Oversourcing of information can be a problem, but two sources is not excessive. In future, please add more references but do not delete existing ones. Thanks Jkaharper (talk) 23:40, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your message @Jkaharper: I definitely understand what you mean here. My main reasoning for replacing the BSC article was that it did not provide a death date, and thus did not act as a citation for one of the central claims made in the sentence about Pope's death. The Guardian obituary did list a date, so at the very least that information did not appear to be copied from any of the other sources. It was for that reason that I erred on the side of excluding it, though upon further reflection I appreciate that there were very few sources on this specific article anyway, and thus it was not analogous to the excessive citing that occasionally pops up elsewhere.
