Welch has worked in the video game industry since 1998.

Welch was born in Fresno, California and raised in the Sierra Nevada town of Bass Lake, California. He lives with his family in Seattle, Washington.

Welch is a member of the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and is an active contributor to The Strong National Museum of Play. in 2019, he collaborated with Arthur Geis on the book Gears of War: Retrospective.^[1]
