"Native American girl"?

edit

Where on the teaser site is there a Native American girl? If you mean the back shown before the title, I think that's probably Tommy, the main character. (Don't assume it's a female because of shoulder-length hair.) -DynSkeet (talk) 13:51, May 17, 2005 (UTC)

Well, she's in the demo. 66.75.54.186 00:04, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Since the teaser site is long gone, I'd say the question doesn't matter any more. - DynSkeet * Talk 01:26, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Name change

edit

The name needs to be changed. Prey is also being released on the Xbox 360, so it should be at Prey (video game) or simply Prey (game). bob rulz 01:32, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Game" could also refer to a board game, a real life game (hide and seek), a card game, etc., so that wouldn't be a proper name for the article. As for "computer game" vs "video game"... a pretty controversial subject, since both are really the same thing. A game played on a computer usually gives the player a video screen, and a game using a video screen usually uses a computer. Some people think video games only refer to console games, and think computer games are PC only, so basically there's no consensus. See Computer and video games for more. (I notice by now the article has been moved/renamed already anyway.) Retodon8 14:21, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Game tech

edit

I think there should probably be a few paragraphs about the kind of technology the game uses. Yes, it uses the Doom 3 engine, but there are quite a few things I've seen in gameplay previews that are worth noting. For instance, the portals. In the first paragraph it mentions them cancelling the portal idea for being too ambitious...back in 1999. However, I've seen recent videos that show some very impressive portals. The way it works is this: When you look at a portal, you see everything that's on the other side, and anything that passes through the portal affects those things as well. It may not sound like much, but it looks so realistic the way a creature can leap through the portal - even if you're looking at it from the side and see it leap out of nothing. You can also shoot through them, and just walking through them doesn't give you any flash of light or realization that "I stepped through a portal." It just seems like you walked through normal air. Also, there was one sequence where the character was walking around on a very small planet in the so-called Sphere. You could see it's curvature and everything, and gravity seemed to still work fine on it. I realize I probably should have written a paragraph about this, but I can't actually confirm the portal thing, and I'm not sure if spherical gravity is so impressive to other people.

I've seen similiar gravity tricks done in Serious Sam, but I believe it was done through the use of a multitude of hint brushes with slightly different gravity directions. The portal tech featured in the previews is quite impressive, I especially like that the rotation & orientation of the portal pairs are not locked together (for example, the crate with a portal on the top face getting knocked over). Some of the most fun I had in Duke Nukem 3D was with the maps that had impossible topography, such as the one with the central room being different depending on which door you came in through.
I wonder if portals are stackable, and how many it takes to cripple rendering performance? Tzarius 08:59, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
The portal technology is by now old news. Quake 3, for example, supported similar portals, and actually used them in a few maps. Guspaz 04:41, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
The portal tech is not old news. The Quake 3 portals did not support seamless transition to the other side and did not allow players to shoot through them. Prey portals are much different and are much harder to implement from a technology stand-point.UrbenLegend 04:33, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Updating

edit

The demo is now released and further details are known. These should be covered in the article. --Ultimus 06:40, 22 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Gameplay

edit

I believe a gameplay section should be added, regarding such elements as spirit & death walking, wall walking, gravity flipping, and Talon (the hawk). Info on weapons should also be added.--Name Theft Victim 22:04, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

White blood cells

edit

I'm not sure how the metaphor in the phrase, '[the sphere] travels the galaxy searching for various alien races to maintain it, like white blood cells in a body' works, as white blood cells fight infection rather than maintain the body. Unless it is refering to the sphere, which seems more like a parasite. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.65.91.84 (talkcontribs)

Well, the Hunters function like a police force, in a way, so that's probably what they meant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.27.56.120 (talk) 22:25, 9 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pop Culture References

edit

The demo includes a decent number of pop culture references in both music and video, including 'Don't Fear the Reaper' by the Blue Oyster Cult and 'Coast to Coast AM.' Also, there are two videos on the television in the bar in the first level. I'm not sure if these references should be added. --Ascagnel 15:26, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

A coincidence.

edit

Reading about the sphere made me think about Naju, an asteroid hurled to earth also featuring massive bio-mechanical lifeforms appeared in The Guardian Legend for the NES. Quite surprisingly, the game was all about... opening portals! Woah!
I must say I believe this is what Quake4 should have been! MaxDZ8 talk 15:52, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The movie Info?

Do you think we should put about the movie. The secret code that looks like "the prey screenply coming 2007"? --Jimmy93211 20:25, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I linked to ikickpuppies.com for the video review that includes gameplay. I put it into the REVIEWS section. Is there a wrong/right way of doing this?

Infogrames

edit

It's being mentioned 3d Realms getting the rights back from Infogrames, but for consistency, it should be noted how the rights came to be with Infogrames in the first place. --jae 11:42, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sales Numbers

edit

Does Anyone here have any sales numbers for Prey? The guys who developed it took some time and they probably deserve good sales so if anyone has the numbers just put a reference there.

Infogrames 2

edit

Uh, we didn't have to "get the rights back". We never lost them. Prey was always our project. All Infrogrames had was distribution rights, which they obtained from the original contract with FormGen, who was bought out by GT Interactive, who was bought out by Infrogrames. We then shopped the rights to Take 2. But there was nothing to "get back". What Infogrames had never stopped us from working on the project. -- Dopefish 08:31, 5 August 2006 (UTC), 3D RealmsReply

Trivia

edit

The previous author wrote:

"In the level "All Fall Down," in the room where Tommy must fight dozens of dishonored dead children, several phrases are seen written in blood that do not appear in any other area. These include "I want to go home," "No one hears us," and "Francine." There is no explanation as to what these mean."

In Fact, at the entrance of the chamber, the player can find a sign of a primary school. Inside the room, there are several roles in the lower section of the walls sprayed with blood. The children were kept on this room and eventualy got killed. Earlier in the game, we can saw a kid who gets killed by something that dragged her inside of an air duct. Maybe, the same creatures got the kids or, they got possessed and killed each other. The writing on the walls could be made by the still living ones or by the spirits.

"No one hear us" - probably they were calling for help, but no one could help them anyway "I want to go home" - Well, every abducted one wanted to... "Francine" - the name of the girl

This should explain this room.

Duke Nukem Forever and Prey

edit

As i was watching the 2001 DNF trailer, at around 1:42 in the trailer i noticed a scene in which Duke holds a bug creature in it's hand and apparently attemps to break one of the bug's leg, probably to use it as a Prey-like grenade.

The sequence is very short, a scond or so, but i was wondering if this is worth mentioning on the Prey's page (or DNF's page.. ?) kkmic

DNF

edit

That's speculative, you could claim any attempt to pull a bug off something is a similar move. Doesn't really need to be there, IMO. Dopefish 06:22, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jack Thomson/Thom Jackson

edit

At the end of the game, in the roadhouse, the radio mentions the mayor as being "Thom Jackson" any thoghts if this is a reference to Jack Thomson, the anti-video game lobbyist?

Races?

edit

Where is it exactly stated there are scientist races and such? I know there are different species on The Sphere but I never heard some being mentioned as scientists and the "worker" species wanting to get off and destroy the sphere but abandoing those hopes (I do know the Hidden want to get off as Elhuit stated that to Tommy). Where is that stated? That sounds very questionable and should be removed if there is no source for it. A bit of the information here looks subjective and fan crufted.

Sequel/Expansion pack?

edit

Where exactly does the information about the prey sequel come from? I am not sure if this is something made up by a fan or information gleaned from a trailer or press release. Until someone replies, I will leave it there with quotes around it.UrbenLegend 03:58, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Technically, it may be OR, but it is the end of the game. Let the credits run all the way thru and then you play more, as described. The text on the screen does include Six months later... and Prey will continue... (I just verified) — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 19:42, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yep, I just played it again today and decided to see through all the credits and sure enough I saw the six months later thingy, so sorry about the mistake. It has been fixed and reordered to fit better into the paragraph. UrbenLegend 04:56, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

How much trivia is triviacruft?

edit

Recently, the user Ptkfgs removed a lot of trivia about the game, with the following edit summary: "remove unbelievably excessive triviacruft and fix a grammar error". Well, how much trivia is triviacruft? Trivia are trivial, the very word says that. How are some trivia more important than the others? Or, if some trivia aren't worth keeping, how are the remaining trivia worth keeping at all? If trivia are unencyclopedic, isn't it more coherent to remove them all? And if they are encyclopedic, on what grounds were some of them arbitrarily removed? Devil Master 10:08, 10 January 2007 (MET)

It looks like I was wrong and Ptkfgs was right (see [1]). Therefore, I am removing the trivia section. Devil Master 10:21, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:The sphere.jpg

In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Tom Hall's note about Prey..

edit

Hey, i got an old Duke Nukem 3D CD, with lots of extra games and other stuff. I found a note on Prey (witch Hall worked on), where he writes some things about it. Maybe it should be put on the article? Its quite interesting.

Alright here it is, you guys can put it in the article if you want:

NOTE Prey's story and character are still in their infancy stages. None of this should be considered final product, just development info. We want to take the step, since the game is about being hunted, of making the character a Native American. The character will be a successful business person or politician, striking against the stereotypes. While a few aspects of Native American culture will be brought into it, it will be as part of fleshing out the character.

STORY You are a successful Native American, fighting for part of what were your ancestral lands. When the ruling goes against you, you pack up your Hummer and head out to the wilderness to contemplate your future and hope for guidance. Suddenly, there is a blinding flash of light, your skin crawls with electricity and you black out. You wake to find yourself in a hostile alien environment. Strange creatures pour out of every crevice of the odd alien architecture, firing weapons of incredible might. You must find out how to defeat them: master the alien weapons, explore the foreboding battlefields to uncover their secrets, and discover what part you will take in this violent new world.

Story

edit

It is said that you are freed by a man with mechanical implants like that of the hosts - however this is not true. This man is one of the Hidden, and is covered in leather armour. It should also be noted that when you are first freed and you encounter the second dog-creature, you can find a body of one of the Hidden that could be him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.69.48.151 (talk) 15:21, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just played the game again, and the one that frees you does have cybernetic implants, and not only that - he speaks to you later in the game, showing he isn't dead so early on. 206.252.74.48 (talk) 15:50, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Linux Version

edit

Got to dispute the information about the Linux version. According to this page and the source, the Linux version was released on October 24, but digging down to where the Linux version is supposed to be available tells another story. Although the "demo" is available at the icculus website, the full version is listed as "...will be released shortly," as of today, October 28. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.71.253.157 (talk) 11:50, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Portals

edit

This article mentions portals a lot, but at least some of these mentions were written by someone who doesn't understand the difference between the science fiction portals depicted in the game and the use of area portals in game engines for visibility determination. 59.167.48.214 (talk) 11:13, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Zeebo

edit

The "Platform(s)" section of the Infobox includes "Zeebo". Lots of problems.

  1. The reference link is dead (http://www.zeebo.com.br/games.aspx)
  2. The name of the game for the Zeebo platform may be Prey Evil
  3. The publisher of the game for the Zeebo platform may be Machineworks Northwest

Plot & Rama

edit

The plot looks to be highly inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's Rama book series. As a reference see: Rendezvous with Rama and Rama (spacecraft). Any official developer's note about that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krioth (talkcontribs) 11:03, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

it is absolutely unrelated. Sphere is an intelligent highly vicious being, that collects weak for biomass and fuel - and strong to use them as agents. 89.0.123.228 (talk) 11:36, 24 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Missing event in the plot

edit

Shouldn’t Jen’s death be included in the synopsis? Not only is it weird to mention her so many times beforehand, emphasizing how she is the only thing Tommy has eyes for and then overlooking that rather important bit about her horrible transformation and her death at Tommy’s hand, it is also kind of confusing to suddenly get told that he meets her in The World of the Ancients without explaining why she is there all of the sudden in the first place. Just a thought. --95.222.223.218 (talk) 00:38, 9 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
