Maryland Cookies are a brand name of cookie produced by Burton's Biscuit Company in the United Kingdom.[1]
Background information
editMaryland cookies were first produced by Lyons in 1956 through its Blackpool subsidiary Symbol Biscuits.[2] At the end of 1994, Lyons Biscuits was sold to Hillsdown Holdings, which in turn was acquired in 1999 by Hicks Muse Tate & Furst. HMTF split off Hillsdown's biscuit manufacturing arm into the Horizon Biscuit Company, and when HMTF bought Burton's Foods in 2000, they merged it with Horizon.[3] Maryland Cookies subsequently took on Burton's branding. In 2021 Burton’s was bought by the Ferrero Group.[4] Today, Maryland is one of the UK's best selling cookies.[5] Over 12 billion Maryland Cookies are sold within Europe each year.[6] The recipe for Maryland Cookies resembles a chocolate chip shortbread.[7]
