Goals
editScope
edit- This Wikiproject covers articles on professions, vocations, and careers.
Guidelines
editThere are several unique aspects which go into producing a quality article about an occupation. Below is a list of the typical content and questions which should be answered when constructing the article.
- Infobox – {{infobox occupation}} (or a more specific template) is used to provide basic information to the reader.
- Navigation – if there is a article series template for the field of work, it can also be included (add the occupation page to the template).
- Lead section – The first sentence should be concise and unambiguous definition of the occupation, describing how it relates to its field of work. The rest of the lead should give a very brief summary of the rest of the article, including information about when the occupation began, major historical changes to the occupation, related/similar occupations, and modern activities of the occupation.
- To find a suggested list related/similar occupations, search the US Occupational Outlook Handbook [1] for the occupation in question.
- History section – What is the etymology of the occupation? When was it started? Who was the first? What where the major changes to the occupation? When were more specialized related occupations developed? Remember, this is a history of the occupation, not the field of work.
- Education section – What schooling or training is necessary? How is the education different around the world? What institutions are preeminent? What are the statistics for graduation vs. final placement in the occupation? This section should be of use to people who want to learn what it takes to become this occupation.
- The US Occupational Outlook Handbook [2] can be used to identify the typical US educational programs. It will also let you compare education requirements for related/similar occupations, e.g., if one occupation requires a training program and a similar one is usually taught via on-the-job training.
- Activities section – What tasks or responsibilities are part of the occupation, especially as relates to modern usage? What titles are used? How does this occupation interrelate with others? How is the occupation different around the world?
- Demography section – How many working in this occupation are there? Is there a difference between countries? If you include income information, be sure to identify the location (e.g., the US) and the date (e.g., 2019).
- Awards section – How are preeminent members of this occupation recognized by their peers? By outside bodies?
Things to avoid:
- "Notable persons" sections should not be used. This kind of who's-who list is often subjective, doesn't inform readers about the occupation itself, and distracts from the overall narrative. Notable members of the occupation should instead be mentioned in context within the History or other sections in a natural way. A link to a "List of <x>s" article can be included in the See also section.
Article assessment
editAs of 11/19/2014, very few articles have been added to the project or rated. Completing the ratings is an important first goal for the project.
