Categorization

edit

Hello, Perspicax,

I'm going a little nuts here with your constant changes in categorization of articles. You remove a category from a page, this empties out a category, it gets tagged for CSD C1 speedy deletion and then, a few days later, you revert yourself and the category needs to be untagged. I did this over a dozen times in the past hour. THINK before you edit so you are not constantly reverting your own editing. If you are unsure, then don't make the edit until you are certain. This kind of editing can become disruptive on the project. Don't add and then remove categories or remove and then readd categories to an article. Thank you. Liz Read! There are even instances when a category was tagged for CSD C1 as an empty category, then untagged a day later and now, today, re-tagged for a CSD C1. You're an experienced editor at this point so, let's cut down on these duplicate actions Liz Read! Talk! 20:10, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
You are correct in suggesting that 4 of my edits today were partially in error. I think we can agree that a lighthouse is both a tower and part of transport infrastructure (and that towers in general are not part of transport infrastructure). It was my intention to restore the transport infrastructure and retain the tower category (which I did with the first one), ie a partial revert rather than a full one. I have now done what I intended to do and removed tags. (One is not usually aware that an edit will empty a category. The lighthouse cfd emptied towers categories; cfds are not supposed to empty unlisted categories.) Perspicax (talk) 21:28, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also this one added a redirect category to the article. I empties this particular redirect, but you added a few more yesterday, and they are sitting in the articles for more than 12h. If you plan to turn the redirects into real categories, you should probably do it or open a discussion urgently. If not, the edits need to be rectified.--Ymblanter (talk) 10:25, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I thought a bot dealt with soft redirect categories. (Stations are usually categorised by their current country; eg Category:Railway stations in India by year of opening, Category:Railway stations in Pakistan by year of opening.) I have rectified the edits, after finding Category:Wikipedia soft redirected categories. Perspicax (talk) 11:06, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Great, thanks. Ymblanter (talk) 12:05, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

When you create new category pages

edit

Hi, when you create a new category page, could you also please create the associated talk page and add the relevant WikiProject tags that are tagged for similar categories? For example, if you create Category:Railway stations in Australia opened in 9999, please look at an existing similar category's talk page like Category talk:Railway stations in Australia opened in 2024 and add, for example: {{WikiProject Australia|transport=yes}} {{WikiProject Trains|stations=yes}} {{WikiProject Years}}, etc to Category talk:Railway stations in Australia opened in 9999. Fork99 (talk) 12:03, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

WP:CREATECAT makes no mention of this. I don't personally see the point as Category:Railway stations in Australia is in both trains and Australia and Category:2000 establishments is in {{WikiProject Years}}. However it would be easy with AWB so I have applied for the necessary permission. Perspicax (talk) 13:40, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's mainly just for consistency's sake and that so if the category is nominated for deletion or otherwise, editors with an interest in that topic are alerted about the discussion for deletion and might want to chime in. See WP:WikiProject Australian Transport/Article alerts for an example of alerts to editors interested in Australian transport.
Unfortunately, it's quite silly that if a parent category page has the tags, the child categories won't have them. It makes no sense, but it's just how Wikipedia has been built, and I think that if Wikipedia were to be completely rebuilt from scratch today, I think that things like this would have been done differently.
I do understand that it's a hassle and I also wish that it were easier to tag new pages with the relevant WikiProjects, and thank you for your contributions thus far. You might want to look into installing the semi-automated script called Rater that might make it slightly easier to add these tags. Otherwise, you could just copy and paste the tags from an existing page. Fork99 (talk) 19:33, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Brush Street Station

edit

Hey, do you happen to know how many platforms Brush Street Station had for passengers? Older Sanborn maps and stuff seem to show two metal canopies between tracks, so I'm guessing at least two island platforms (or four platform faces). But did passengers use platforms along the north or side side of the station? Would just be interesting to have some basic information on the layout of the station and how the platforms were numbered. Criticalthinker (talk) 07:04, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't have nay personal knowledge of this but there is a thread on the topic [1]. Perspicax (talk) 07:15, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that's where I got most of the info from. lol Criticalthinker (talk) 14:09, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Irish politicians

edit

Why are you adding Irish politicians to "activist" categories? They are almost all elected Teachta Dála, and are already in appropriate politician categories/subcategories. Can you please reverse the additions where they hold or have held elected office, please? BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 16:07, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I am also puzzled by the adding of these categories, particularly in the cases where the person holds or has held public office. I too think you should revert them. CeltBrowne (talk) 17:13, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I agree with CeltBrowne. These activist categories are not for elected politicians. Please revert your changes. Spleodrach (talk) 18:23, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
They were all already in the tree 'Irish activists'; I have not added any. All I have done is intersect 'people from X' with 'Irish activists'. Eg Joe Higgins (politician) is in other activists categories, as is Leo Varadkar. Eg Category:Irish rebels is a subcategory of Category:Irish activists. It may be that some politicians were already miscategorised as activists - nothing to do with me. Perspicax (talk) 20:56, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wait, what - "rebels" are a sub-category of "activist"? Weird, and probably inappropriate. Also, irrelevant for this discussion. What "activist" categories is Leo Varadkar a member of? Or Roderic O'Gorman? It looks like there's something up with this "Irish activists tree" you mention, because neither of the first two BLPs I looked at are or were members of it. Can you link to it? In any case, elected politicians shouldn't be in an activist category, whether that's a "tree" or "by county". BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 22:15, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
