Ambassadors

edit

I really think we should limit specific Ambassadors to X categories to people who were resident ambassadors in that country. Otherwise we should limit people to being in just Ambassadors of Y for their sending country. All people who we have reliable sources for should be in Ambassadors of Y for the country they represented, that is a defining link. Only those who we have strong evidence the particular country they were assigned to is defining should be in a category for that country. Since Ambassadors are a sub-cat of diplomats, people who are in Ambassadors of France should not also be in French diplomats. I also think we should rename diplomats cats to Diplomats of Foo. So Diplomats of France. In Diplomats what is defining is the country that employed you, not nationality. People who are French people who were Diplomats for something or someone other than France should be categorized based on that and not be in the Diplomats of France category. We really have way too much category bloat with ambassadors and Diplomats. Especially the huge problem of probably 1,000 categories or more with just 1 article. Thank-you for the nominations you have made to upmerge small categories. There are a lot. However since the issues of the categories are often unique, I do not think large scale nominations will work. Narrow category is a rule that seems to be flagrantly violated in a lot of places.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:00, 10 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Liam Payne shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:51, 16 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

@AntiCompositeNumber: just curious why you didn't template the other editor, who used a false edit summary and removed content even after I expressed opposition? AusLondonder (talk) 22:59, 16 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Not sure who you're referring to. There's been a lot of edits to that page, and I haven't read them all. Your reverts of the image are covered by WP:3RRNO #7, but the 3 reverts over which source to cite and the 1 revert for style aren't. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 23:10, 16 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Reverting one violation of WP:ENGVAR could hardly be considered part of an edit war. AusLondonder (talk) 00:00, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Merging categories to more than one parent

edit

Hi, I've noticed that both on the Speedy page and in full CFD nominations, you have been nominating categories for merging to just one parent, even though they are intersections of multiple parent hierarchies.

E.g. you nominated Category:Defunct airlines of Oman for merging to Category:Defunct airlines of Asia, ignoring its other parents Category:Airlines of Oman, Category:Defunct airlines by country and Category:Defunct companies of Oman.

Although the CFD templates only allow you to specify one or two merge targets, you should manually add others into the nomination line after saving the nomination. Please do this in future when nominating categories for merging, except when for some reason only a single merge target is appropriate.

In the above case, as the article was a list rather than a single airline, I have also moved it back into Category:Defunct airlines of Asia by country. – Fayenatic London 14:03, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fayenatic london. In this case I considered a merge to the defunct airlines of Asia category was the most suitable option. By merging to Category:Defunct companies of Oman we now have another category with a single article. We may as well have kept the Category:Defunct airlines of Oman in that case as we've simply moved the problem from one category to another. Category:Defunct airlines by country is labelled as a container category which should only contain subcategories. This list is now the only article within that category. I don't see how that's helpful as the article was going to be categorised higher in the categorisation hierarchy (Category:Defunct airlines of Asia). Interested in hearing your thoughts. AusLondonder (talk) 14:35, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, as you were making a full nomination, you could have listed that parent at the same time. Leaving such parents empty, to be deleted later, means there will be no trace of the reason for deletion. It is best practice to list such parents in a nomination, so that anybody looking for those categories later can follow the links and see WHY they were deleted, and find what was in there before. – Fayenatic London 14:45, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah, sorry, it wan't a full CFD. OK, I have moved the list up into Category:Defunct organizations based in Oman, and deleted the companies one under WP:G6 and recording it as "empty after Category:Defunct airlines of Oman merged to Category:Defunct airlines of Asia per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy". – Fayenatic London 14:50, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
As for the container category, I have removed that template, as lists should be acceptable as well as subcats in a "by country" category. – Fayenatic London 15:05, 17 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Here's another one: you nominated Category:Agriculture in the Bahamas for speedy merger only to Category:Industry in the Bahamas, removing Agriculture and fisheries in the Bahamas from three other valid parents: Category:Agriculture by country, Category:Agriculture in the Caribbean and Category:Agriculture in North America by country. I could not work out any rationale for removing the member page from those parents, so I manually merged the article to all of them. Please add all necessary targets to such nominations in future. – Fayenatic London 16:50, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Noted. When you use Twinkle for a speedy merge it only has one field for target category. AusLondonder (talk) 22:58, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. Thank you for adding a second target for Category:Mining in Croatia, but in case you didn't see it, Armbrust added a third and fourth.[1]Fayenatic London 11:55, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category:Bankstown Line

edit

Hello, AusLondonder,

I'm not sure why you put a tag on this empty category to rename it to Category:Sydney Trains when there is already an 11 year old category with this page title. So, this category can't be renamed to a category that already has this name. Maybe you meant to suggest a history merge or a different category name? Liz Read! Talk! 18:57, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Liz: Hi, I was proposing a speedy merge per WP:C2F as it was a category with one eponymous page. AusLondonder (talk) 08:11, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well the tag says a speedy rename which can't happen because there is already an existing category with the proposed rename page title. Could you remove this CFD tag? It's an empty category right now and has had CSD C1 tags put on it twice already which I've removed because it has a CFD tag on the page.
Also, I came across some CFD nominations for categories about restaurants in Welsh cities but you didn't nominate Category:Restaurants in Gwynedd and it is the only remaining category in Category:Restaurants in Wales that isn't either tagged for a CFD discussion or a CSD C1 deletion. You might want to send this on its way to CFD, too. Liz Read! Talk! 07:53, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
No problem, I see you removed the speedy merge tag. Usually if a category has a single eponymous article it can be nominated at CFDS under WP:C2F, which was the case for this category as it wasn't empty when I added the nom. I'll nominate the Gwynedd category as it doesn't make sense to have a single underpopulated subcategory of the restaurants in Wales tree. AusLondonder (talk) 14:07, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
No, unfortunately, this empty category still has the CFD speedy rename tag on it. Could you please remove it since it won't be renamed to an existing category? Then I can tag it as a CSD C1 empty category or you can. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 06:11, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah apologies I misunderstood I thought you intended removing it. AusLondonder (talk) 08:42, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Talk:Donald Trump is for discussing improvements to the Donald Trump article, not for more general forum-like discussions about Trump, politics, and such. What caught my eye: [2] It looked like NOTFORUM vio to me. I am not singling you out, I'm just trying to address a general NOTFORUM problem currently happening at the article; see Talk:Donald Trump#FORUM. I also failed to dig deep enough to see your 8 other comments, which were not NOTFORUM vios, and remember I don't know you. Sorry if I overstepped. ―Mandruss  04:00, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
My comments were in direct response to a section titled "Can we add some positive things about his presidency to this article?" The reply you are referring to was directly in response to the original editor citing "positive" things that should be better covered within the article. It was not a discussion about Trump but directly in response to proposed edits. AusLondonder (talk) 04:17, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
