Spliting Section

edit

I suggest spliting the "Black Lives Matter Plaza" into a different article. P,TO 19104 (talk) 21:09, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

What would be the benefit of doing that? – Arms & Hearts (talk) 22:07, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
It would make sense if the content could be substantially expanded beyond what would fit in a section here.--Pharos (talk) 23:21, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
If there is more to write but it's determined not to be Wikipedia-notable, we would welcome such a page at Wikispore:Geo Spore.--Pharos (talk) 04:22, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think there's probably a good reason to do that. Could go into the artists behind the mural, its planning, dates of when everything happened, responses from BLM. That content isn't there right now, but it could be. Bangabandhu (talk) 13:54, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
If this article reaches the point where WP:SIZESPLIT applies it would be reasonable to split it, but it's currently a long way off that size and very unlikely to be expanded to such a size soon. At present it's possible that Black Lives Matter Plaza meets WP:GNG, but per WP:NOPAGE it's sometimes "better to cover notable topics, that clearly should be included in Wikipedia, as part of a larger page about a broader topic, with more context"; I think a stretch of road that's part of a notable longer road, and has thus far only been the subject of a brief burst of attention that isn't guaranteed to last, is a good example of such a case. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 20:02, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this is a good summary. There is no need for a split right now, and it seems unlikely one would be warranted in the near future. If the page gets much bigger then we could reevaluate.  — Amakuru (talk) 22:47, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

16th Street NWBlack Lives Matter Plaza – street was officially renamed per sources in existing article — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yardenac (talkcontribs) 20:10, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 03:28, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
According to Google Maps, only two blocks of 16th have been renamed, so renaming the whole article doesn't make sense. --Atkinson (talk) 06:05, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. It's only two blocks, not the entire street. And even if it were the entire street, WP:NAMECHANGES would apply. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 07:01, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. As stated above, Black Lives Matter Plaza, NW, is only two blocks of 16th Street, NW, and not the entire street. D.C. has renamed portions of other streets after people or groups, including the naming of 17th Street, NW, between P and R streets, NW, as "Frank Kameny Way" in honor of Frank Kameny, and the 1700 block of New Hampshire Avenue, NW, as "Delta Sigma Theta Way" after the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. This symbolic renaming of streets serves as an honor or memorial, but it does not change the name of the street or the postal addresses along the street. Black Lives Matter Plaza should be maintained as a section of the 16th Street, NW, article with its own article due to its significant and historic nature. -- West Virginian (talk) 14:26, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per the above. Not synonymous, one is a subtopic of the other. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 20:05, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

The Plaza is the focus of a lot of political discussion which merits inclusion in Wikipedia but probably wouldn't fit well the article for 16th Street NW. Given the international press coverage and the amount of information available I've created a separate article. John Cummings (talk) 12:39, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

@John Cummings: Why did you ignore the discussion immediately above this where this was discussed? – Arms & Hearts (talk) 14:27, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Arms & Hearts:, I'm sorry if this wasn't clear, to expand on the reasons for creating the article are:
  • There is a very large amount of coverage of the plaza in its own right, I could have added 100 reliable sources if I had the time.
  • Much of the coverage and discussion about the plaza is about the cultural meaning in the current context of the protests and wider civil rights work, it feels out of place and disconnected to the article about the street. Its a smaller section about a larger road, but the meaning and significance is independent of its size.
Thanks
John Cummings (talk) 15:03, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't doubt that you had reasons; it would have been better, however, to express them in the discussion, then await a consensus, rather than rendering the discussion redundant. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 15:16, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Unclear wording

edit

"On June 5, 2020 muralists painted the words ..."

Does this mean that there was an indefinite number of muralists painting the words on June 5, 2020, or that there were 2020 muralists painting the words on June 5? --87.95.193.21 (talk) 10:33, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

  Fixed by adding a comma after 2020. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 11:24, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Height of mural

edit

Is it 35' as DCist claims, or 50' as WP claims? I think its 50'. Bangabandhu (talk) 01:48, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposed

edit

FYI I have proposed that Black Lives Matter Plaza is merged into this article, please see its talk page for the discussion. Games of the world (talk) 18:25, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
