Since "state championship" is a very widely used term across the United States and other nations, I think that a "state championship" article should be general and this specific competition should have another title like "State Championship (New Zealand Cricket)". I agree, but on the principle that it is bad to name an article after this year's sponsor - it makes it harder for people to find the article, particularly in years where the principa sponsor has changed. This article also covers the period when it was the Shell Trophy. How about New Zealand first-class cricket championship? dramatic 18:08, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that makes sense. I was not aware that "state" referred to a sponsor here.
