Quotation

[edit]

Can anyone explain what Judith Butler meant by "can only be understood through reference to what is barred from the signifier within the domain of corporeal legibility", particularly the phrase "corporeal legibility", which can be found in numerous places on the web, but seemingly not defined anywhere?

While this appears to be genuine citation from the source paper (see no, it's really in the source, see https://www.sfu.ca/~baw2/GSWS826/Butler.pdf) makes me a bit wary is that this same quotation was cited in a hoax paper, see here: https://www.skeptic.com/downloads/conceptual-penis/23311886.2017.1330439.pdf

English is not my first language, but I believe legibility is the same as readability, so Butler is probably saying "unconscious motivations cannot be understood by a reading of the body alone." Gmsrubin (talk) 19:37, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
